An ethical dilemma can be defined as a complex situation, which involves moral and societal conflicts. The creation of designer babies can potentially be considered an ethical problem because of how conflicting the situation is. For example, many people from all different backgrounds and age groups have many conflicting views about the ideas of genetic engineering. An ethical dilemma can be more perplexing, or difficult to come up with exactly one right solution because there are many options and different solutions that can be taken into account to solve the problem. It is one of the most controversial issues, especially in the United States. The discussion of ethics comes into play with the topic of gender for genetic engineering, is that the parents are choosing the embryo and future child’s gender assignment, making it so they do not have a choice in the matter at all (Storrs, 2016, p.2). The argument here, is that pregnancy is a very natural process, so let nature take its course in regards to everything; including gender. All in all, there is a strong belief that these operations should in fact happen in terms of medical reasoning, but as for the alteration of appearances, there is more hesitation among society.
