My term paper is a critique of women 's position in Dharamshastra Manusmriti originating from both the east and west. It questions and challenges the definitive status of the western philosophical elucidation and a flawed comprehension of the orient. It doesn 't go on lauding Manusmriti, but rather making a real to life examination of women 's position. It doesn 't assent to all the socio-political writings about women nor reject it anxiously. An endeavor has been made to historicize and to place them in the setting of the times.
Manusmriti is considered as an integral part of Indian Scholarly tradition and it talks about do 's and don 'ts, the detailed code of behavior in today 's life. Most of the researchers trust that Manusmriti was written between 200 BC and 200 AD. Though first commentary on Manusmriti by Medhathihti came out in ninth century AD and thus there is a time gap of almost 1300 years. Amid this time, Suktas were all saved overwhelmingly in Smriti tradition i.e., oral tradition.
The prevalent tone in the social theory of Dharamshastra has been of a woman who is distinctive and yet equal to men. In a legitimate social order they should not contend but rather coordinate. Manu, who is viewed as most elevated power on social matters has equated deities and women. there is no differentiation between a woman who bear kids and provide affection and those idols which bring favorable luck and holiness.(9.26) It has been argued that there is no right for women in case of marriage and divorce. This charge can be effortlessly discredited by indicating that women had a right to separate and remarriage. Manu has proclaimed that a wife need not to be rebuffed where she forsakes her spouse who is feeble or experiencing an incurable and infectious ailment(9.79) and she may well remarry if her past life has not
