Going into my sophomore year, I began a job in the emergency department at the hospital located in the college town. During my first day, I got to see a variety of emergent and non-emergent medical procedures. The level of care that the varying healthcare professionals provided to these patients was fascinating and became intrigued to a career path in the medical field. Over the next couple of years, I narrowed the possibility

My interest in technology and curiosity of the human anatomy perfectly binds together in Radiography, especially in the treatment aspect, which is what really caught my attention about this course. I was highly fascinated by the scientific aspect of the course, and look forward to studying the technological approach to medicine – learning to use advance imaging techniques, such as X-rays and MRI Scans. Inspired by my parent’s hard work in healthcare, I was determined to develop an empathetic approach towards other people and eventually gained the desire to be at the heart of modern medicine, by wielding the latest imaging technology to cater to the needs of others.
After completing the interest profiler, I was not able to locate my profession of choice. I’ve always want to be a business owner but if I had to choose a profession from the list, I would have to choose a Parole or Probation officer for starters. To become a parole or probation officer it is a requirement to obtain a bachelor’s degree in human services. According to CFNC.gov, the average annual wage is $39,280. I would say that it pretty much matched my prior knowledge this profession because I’ve done reasearch on it prior to this assignment. Even though, I knew about the annual wages I’m still actually in shock that it is as low as it is. Mainly because of all that they have to encounter you’d think they made more.
For my informational interview, I chose to interview a retired Homicide Detective name Shaun Donelson who is currently now a supervisor for detectives. The book, The World Is Flat by Thomas Friedman (American journalist, author, and three-time Pulitzer winner) said, "The key to thriving, as an individual, in a flat world is figuring out how to make yourself "untouchable" (280). The term untouchable means someone whose job will not be outsourced. Automation and outsourcing have displaced workers from their jobs. Workers now a days should be trained to become untouchables so they could maintain fungible jobs. The Pacific Northwest University of Health Sciences in Yakima has trained students who would like to pursue professions in the medical field. It soon became second nature to write abbreviations like Complaint of (C/O), History of (H/O), Hypertension (HTN), Weight (Wt.), or Rheumatoid arthritis (RA). I was relishing the chance to learn and take in a variety of different diagnosis to discover each day. With each patient that walked in the front door, it was a new learning opportunity for me to observe. I went from looking like I had five heads when I would hear my coworkers discuss things. To becoming proficient when providing the necessary information needed for an insurance company to pay for a patient’s office visit, and not questioning myself when needing to determine the medical code that went along with a
Knowledge, skills, and attitudes are the three core characteristics of a good professional. There are considerable deficits in all three of them, but the knowledge and attitudes I have right now are fairly satisfactory. My skills, however, need improvement the most. SP 124 and SP 158 will be an avenue for the strengthening of those qualities. Two sessions of each subject were allotted for observation in CTS pedia and CTS AA, and it helped us realise which areas are our strong suits, what areas we need to improve on and plan how we are going to eliminate those hindrances to becoming the clinicians we aspire to be.
