Although the Diane Downs case involved a murder many mothers have chosen their romantic interest over their children. Many women who choose to neglect their children for men usually live in poor conditions such as when a single mother can’t provide for her family she will find a man who can take care of business within the household, usually when single mothers find men to take care of their families the men tend to be abusive and sometimes sexual to children. A mother’s neglect and unwilling to put the needs of her children before her own can turn into a vicious cycle of abuse and substance abuse to forget what the last family line did to them in the past. Along with her failure to keep a steady job and support her children Diane started having an steady affair with Robert Knickerbocker. After Diane became so consumed with Robert that she wanted him to end his marriage to be with her, Robert ended the relationship stating that he didn’t want to be a stepfather to her children. A well minded single mother wouldn’t have thought twice to leave a man like Robert Knickerbocker, but Diane was so romantically consumed by Robert that on May 19, 1983 she decided to drive her three children down a dark country road and shoot them while also shooting herself to make it look like a gunned robbery. Diane’s middle child Cheryl Lynn Down died while going to the hospital. When the police questioned Diane she gave a full detail of what happened the night of the incident. When questioned by police Diane said that a man with bushy hair, gunned her down on the side of Old Mohawk road while shooting her kids and then her, police were sent out search parties to find the stranger. As time grew on the detectives started to come to a dead end with trying to find a leading man that fit Diane’s description of the attacker. During the search for the strange gunman Diane kept giving bizarre interviews , one of the detectives on the case stated “she couldn’t keep her mouth shut” (“The Diane Downs Story”, 2010). Diane didn’t show much grievance for her murdered daughter and her two children that were in critical conditions. The gun that was used to shoot Diane and her kids was identified as a 22 caliber, when questioned by police if Diane had ever owned a 22 caliber she denied it but two of Diana's former partners told police that Diane indeed had a 22 caliber gun. After nine months of searching for the gunman police arrest Diane
Push, by Sapphire/Ramona Lofton, is a very powerful novel about an abused illiterate girl who goes by the name Precious. When reading the book you will be reading it through the eyes of this 16 year old girl, who doesn’t know how it feels to be loved. She lives in a small apartment in Harlem, New York with her abusive mother for 16 years. Precious wrote things that happens in her life[SR1] to cope with her feelings. She was sexually abused by both her mother and father until she was 16.
They later divorced and Diane was awarded custody of their young daughter, Shawna. Kenneth Lee Schofield passed away 4 years after Diane 's death. Here in Australia within the space of only a couple of years, the nation has seen one mother throw her child down a drain, another take the lives of seven of her own children and the life of a child relative. Another bury an extremely young child on Maroubra beach in Sydney, with the body being discovered by young children playing on the beach, displaying the wider negative effects within society the actions of violent and evil mothers can have. Then of course there is the case of Keisha Abrahams who was murdered by her mother, yet the she was immediately portrayed by the press as the innocent victim, and the father and step father were automatically accused and vilified in the press. Of course it take such horrendous events to occur prior to mother abuse and murder of children to brought to light. Then naturally the stories disappear just as quickly as they appear, and no further action is taken in-regard to discovering why so many mothers abuse and kill their children, as it makes many in society uncomfortable to believe mothers are truly capable of such evil and vile
Ralph Flynn is a California man who has recently filed a lawsuit against his parents for using him as a sex slave after adopting him at nine years old from a Russian orphanage. Ralph and Carolyn have been arrested for several months and their trial will shed light on the many abuses faced by Ralph during his childhood and teenage years. Adoption is a very selective process but international adoption may be less so. Every parent in the United States seeking to adopt a child must go through many tests and surveys before being approved as financially, mentally, and physically fit to adopt a young child; this process is to ensure that every adopted child has a good home. However, this process and its extreme rigor may change due to the relevance of this crime.
A little girl is forced to grow up with the “helping” hand of a drunk father and an excitement-addict mother, both of which pay little attention to what their children need: love. Instead, they go on wild adventures: breaking out of hospitals, travelling the desert, encountering perverted relatives and jumping into animal cages- just to name a few. While this may seem obscure, this story is actually true.
The Craft: Sarah Bailey versus Nancy Downs. In 1996 the soon-to-be hit cult classic “The Craft” was released and the world didn’t know what hit it. Much like the 1993 hit “Hocus Pocus” starring Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy and Carrie Bradshaw Sarah Jessica Parker, The Craft followed a coven of witches, but this time it took a darker turn, focusing on the lives of four teenage girls and their attempts to balance their newfound power and live ordinary lives. In this dissertation I intend to dissect the relationship of the two main characters, New girl Sarah Bailey and Bad girl Nancy Downs and how their relationship is shaped by the events of the film.
Foster Care is one of the major issues still faced in this world today. According to Crosson-Tower (2010), in the early 1800s, boarding homes were instituted with the idea of rescuing “good” children from ‘bad” parents. The study notes the idea of paying for foster homes to house children was renounced in view of agencies advocating foster care argued that it will lead foster homes to take children for money rather than out of altruism. However, the practice of paying for foster care emerged and the government became involved regulating and administering the foster care system in the twentieth century (Crosson-Tower, 2013). Her research indicates foster care became progressively more common as the form of caring where the parents were unable
Jonathan Metts Incest and Abuse in African American Households Despite centuries of change in African American society, inecst and physical abuse continue to be a prevalent problem in many black households. The number of lives and families affected by these types of abuse is truly astounding and appalling. Perhaps the most appalling element of these situations is the fact that it continues to occur frequently today.
Every year, 2 million children come into contact with the child welfare system due to investigations of parental abuse or neglect (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, 2004). A recent policy implemented by Anytown’s Department of Job and Family Services pertains to the issue of child endangerment. It states that, “any household having one or more documented offenses of domestic violence, child abuse, or drug or alcohol related offenses committed by the mother, father, guardian, and/ or caregiver, will result in the removal of any child or children from the home.” The child will be placed in the care of the state until documentation can be provided on the offender, whereas they are “offense free” for a period of no less than six
According to The Child Welfare Outcomes Reports made by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in 2011 there were approximately 742,000 cases of confirmed child maltreatment. The national child victim rate was 9.9 child victims per 1,000 children in the population. This rate decreased from 10.3 child victims per 1,000 children in the population in 2008 to the most resent 9.9 rate in 2011. The state rate varies ranging from 1.2 child victims per 1,000 children to 24.0 child victims per 1,000 children. Even though the rate has decreased some of these instances are not reported until something major occurs like in Brianna’s
Still, regardless of the fact that practitioners and researchers stress the importance of the positive correlations found between visitation and the child’s wellbeing, it is worth noting that such findings usually apply to mostly young children (aged 3 -11) (Eagle, 2013) with less literature exploring the views of teenagers, even though most adolescents find contact with their imprisoned mother extremely important (Brown et al 2002). Nevertheless the few researchers (Trice and Brewster 2004; Kierkus and Baer 2002) that have examined samples of adolescents found that low levels of visitation are directly linked to a predicted high level of engagement in criminal activities on behalf of the child. Therefore as previously argued, not only children
One of, if not the most important issue regarding child welfare is the role parents play in their children’s lives. A major issue facing the protection of children is lack of proper parenting education. According to research by the National Children’s Alliance “More than 3 million American children are investigated for child maltreatment each year. " The site also states that “Nearly 700,000 children are abused in the U.S annually" and even more alarming statics is that “In 2016, an estimated 1,750 children died from abuse and neglect in the United States.” A major part of this issue stems from parents who overwhelmed or are underprepared to be parents lacking the proper resources and parental knowledge to take care of their children.
Each year in America alone, an estimate of two million children, ranging from infants to teenagers go through minor or major kinds of abuse which include neglect, physical, emotional, and sexual maltreatment. According to the National American Committee to Prevent Child Abuse, neglect represented 54% of confirmed cases of child abuse, physical abuse represented 22%, sexual abuse represented 8%, emotional maltreatment represented 4%, and other forms of maltreatment represented12%. It also indicates that child abuse is far more common in single-parent families than in families where both parents are
The morning of Tuesday, July, 20th, 1964, the next door neighbor Cathleen Goebbels saw all the lights on at the Thompson house. That's not normal, she thought, so she went to check it out. When she knocked on the door, no one answered. The car was there so she decided to try the door. It was unlocked.
