Diet Soda: The Dangerous Facts about Artificial Sweeteners
Diet sodas, zero-calorie, calorie-free, and sugar-free soda varieties are all popular, but what are the ingredients, calories, and raw materials in those sodas? They are especially popular among those who try to reduce their sugar and calorie intake. People prefer them over regular sodas because the words diet or zero-calorie attached to them allow them to drink soda without feeling guilty. However, the question remains, do they lead to weight loss or are they healthy? Some people claim that the non-sugar sweeteners (NSS) used in diet sodas are harmful for your health.
In fact, recent guideline released by World Health Organization warns the use of non-sugar sweeteners for diet and

This section will examine a Coca-Cola product as an example. Coca-Cola's Diet coke product page has given the ingredients information, it reads Carbonated Water, Caramel Color, Aspartame, Phosphoric Acid, Potassium Benzoate (To Protect Taste), Natural Flavors, Citric Acid, Caffeine. Coca-Cola Zero Sugar contains Carbonated Water, Caramel Color, Phosphoric Acid, Aspartame, Potassium Benzoate (To Protect Taste), Natural Flavors, Potassium Citrate, Acesulfame Potassium, Caffeine (The Coca-Cola Company, 2023). Both Diet Coke and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar are the same as the original Coca-Cola in that it contains carbonation, acidity, flavoring, caffeine, and caramel coloring to give it that brownish-brown color, but unlike Coca-Cola, it contains no fructose, glucose, or other sugars. This makes it lower in calories. Nevertheless, the secret to why Diet Coke and Coca-Cola Zero are as sweet and delicious as Coca-Cola lies in the sweetener used. Coca-Cola Zero is sweetened with Acesulfame Potassium, sweeteners that are hundreds of times sweeter than sugar but are not absorbed by the body like sugar, in other words, they are not used as calories. Coca-Cola Zero uses “sucralose” and “acesulfame potassium,” artificial sweeteners that have far fewer calories than sugar, to provide sweetness (Coca-Cola (Japan) Company, 2023). Sucralose is a sweetener that is said to be about 600 times sweeter than sugar. It is used by beverage manufacturers because a …show more content…

The product being advertised is the alternative to regular Pepsi, the zero sugar kind, and this should be addressed in the commercial. This is one of the best selling points of the zero sugar soda because of the fact that it is zero calories and some think it is healthier than regular highly-sugary soda. According to an article written by Joseph Younan, “A 12-ounce can of Regular Pepsi contains 150 calories, 41 grams of carbohydrates, 39 grams of sugar, and 0 grams of fat. Pepsi Zero Sugar has zero calories, zero grams of carbohydrates, zero grams of sugar, and zero grams of fat.” This shows that Pepsi Zero Sugar has no sugar or carbohydrates while regular pepsi has a combined 80 grams in a single can.
. . . In this issue of the JCI [Journal of Clinical Investigation], Stanhope and colleagues demonstrate that consumption of fructose-sweetened but not glucose-sweetened beverages for 10 weeks increases de novo lipid synthesis, promotes dyslipidemia, impairs insulin sensitivity, and increases visceral adiposity in overweight or obese adults” (Abstract). Fructose sweetener is another way to say high fructose corn syrup. This study proved that fructose sweetened drinks caused harm to the body and signaled a starting point for diseases such as metabolic syndrome, obesity, insulin difficulties, high blood pressure, high triglycerides, low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and ultimately coronary heart disease. Not only does high fructose cause stress on the body, but fructose can also cause serious
He states, “...people love sugar especially, kids. And up to a cert point-the bliss point- the more sugar there is, the better.” In his analysis, Moss concludes what the American Heart Association has to say about the sugar content in processed foods. “ “High intake of dietary sugars in the setting of a worldwide pandemic of obesity and cardiovascular disease have heightened concerns about the adverse effects of excessive consumption of sugars.” It
When the 1970s introduced High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), a cheap sweetener alternative to sucrose in a fructose-glucose liquid form (fifty five percent fructose, forty two percent glucose, and three percent saccharides), it brought extensive numbers of health problems with it (Bray, 2004 & Johnson, 2010 ). Prior to the 70’s, on average, sugar contributed to four percent of daily caloric intake, however over the past four and a half decades, this statistic has increased to whopping sixteen percent, leading some scientist to consider it an “addiction” as they observe the sugar substitute wreak havoc on humans’ bodies worldwide (Butler, 2011). Along with hooking those who indulge sweets to it, High Fructose Corn Syrup also leads to obesity:
People therefore eat more than the body requires which can progress to cardiovascular disease, hypertension, obesity, and lipid problems; all a part of the metabolic syndrome. Which is why fructose is a biochemical precursor for a myriad of issues and should be
Before you begin reading this paper I ask that you take a moment to write down everything that you have consumed today, if it is only the morning please write down everything you consumed yesterday. Then, next to all of the items you have consumed write the amount of sugar that those items contained. If you fit the “average [statistic], between 30 and 40 teaspoons of ‘added’ sugar per day” would have been consumed according to data found by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (Thornley, 2012, p. 52). After reading this data you will be shocked to learn that the recommended daily sugar intake is only 6 to 9 teaspoons of added sugar. You might be thinking so what?
When sitting down drinking a diet soda people really don’t think about what makes diet soda diet. If food and drink companies put diet on front of something does that automatically make it beater or even good for the consumer? When making something diet companies usually go straight for the artificial sweeteners to drop the calories in a food or drink, and when people pick up the diet product off the shelf at the store and they automatically think its good or better for them because of just one little word added to the label. But is it really better for you or could these sweeteners be doing harm? Yeah it might help someone loose that one extra pound or help with fitting into that year-old pair of pants that someone has been just dyeing to
Added Sugar Article Reflection In the article from USA Today “Eating too much added sugar may be killing you,” Nanci Hellmich reports that people who consume too much added sugar are at higher risk of death from heart disease than normal people. Hellmich says that too much added sugar affects your body in negative ways and leads to heart disease and death. She supports her claim by stating how many calories from added sugar the American Heart Association recommends getting from added sugars each day, then reveals how many calories from added sugar one regular soda contains, then shows many different statistics about people consuming lots of added sugar having higher-than-normal death rates from heart disease.
- Limit added sugars. Naturally occurring sugars, such as those in fruit and milk, are not added sugars. Examples of added sugars include brown sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, honey and others. - Ready to drink cartons of juices or squash – as these are high in calories and are acidic, which causes tooth decay. - Foods that are made for adults, e.g. sports drink, weight loss food or to reduce cholesterol such as special margarines and caffeinated drinks.
In order to state that added sugars are detrimental to health, Hellmich delineates how too much added sugar in a diet is slowly killing users of it. For example, “...including obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and risk factors for heart disease and stroke”. Hellmich is effective in displaying how added sugar can be very unhealthy and may cause death (if over consumed) because Hellmich has lots of details, quotes, studies that were performed, and two perspectives from different associations. The title of this
“A 20-ounce soda contains 15 to 18 teaspoons of sugar and 240 calories. These calories don’t satiate your child, so he will consume the same amount of food as if he did not drink the soda”. However, there are also many sodas that have 0 calories in their product. “We scoured the shelves to find the best sodas out there. Our criteria: no high-fructose corn syrup; no more than 20 g of sugar; no artificial colors like Red 40 or Yellow 5; and a glass of the fizzy stuff had to be less than 100 calories.”
It is the responsibility of the health professionals that have an important role to play in advising patients about the current evidence available to support the use of low calorie sweeteners within a healthy diet.
