For over decades, architecture and interior design have struggled with how and where they intersect as professions. Both lines of work are somewhat dependent and complete one another but not everyone has a clear understanding of where each profession’s responsibility and duty lies. This research is aimed at the sole purpose of comprehending the similarities and differences between the two and identifying where they meet in construction projects.

This is apparent as even modern definitions of interior design state that its elements are in fact closely related to architecture. Experienced interior designers and architects both employ scientific as well as artistic skills to qualify in creating or designing spaces that solve problems or meet the requirements of building owners and that is done through spatial design and planning. The spaces created should be pleasingly structured, safe and functional. Generally speaking, Architects and interior designers creative and artistic individuals who usually have cross-over skills, namely space-planning, are up-to-date with a state’s building codes and regulations and closely examine materials, finishes, furnishings and cabinetry to make sure they are the right fit for the client and for the home itself. At times the job of architects overlaps with that of interior designers as they both select the tile, flooring and lighting and design the look/style of a home’s interiors. While architects and interior designers are both highly trained professionals with comprehensive knowledge of architectural principles, literally speaking these two careers are taught different disciplines. On one hand there’s architecture; a much regulated field. The top priority of an architect is to design and create buildings and spaces that are safe to use and inhabit. Architecture deals with designing the whole structure of a building that includes its interiors and exteriors. The architecture plan focuses on the electrical and plumbing requirements, lightening plan for each room, exterior design elements, and the interior architecture, trim, millwork and ceiling finishes. Interior design in contrast focuses on selecting interior materials, finishes, hardware, furnishings, textiles, drapery/window treatments, paint color, wallpaper and accents. This is why architects tend to view interior designers as people who come in after the “real” work is done, after the building has been established and everything is put into place, and simply embellish the space they had just created with carpet, tile and paint. But that is of course belittling the interior designer’s work. Architects work with the main structure of a building, they are authorized to make changes to it.
