QUESTION 1
Differentiate between Database Management System and Information Retrieval System by focusing on their functionalities
DEFINITION
DATABASE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM (DBMS)
Database management system program that enables users to store, modify and extract information from databases.
Software that uses a standard method of cataloguing, retrieving, and running queries on data. It also manages incoming data, organizes it, and provides ways for data to be modified, extracted by other user and programme.
Examples of DBMS are MySQL, Microsoft Access, SQL Server, File Maker, Oracle, and Clipper.
INFORMATION RETRIEVAL SYSTEM
The techniques of storing and recovering and often disseminating stored data through the use of a computerised

Over time "data" has become the plural of datum. "Information" is an older word that dates back to the 1300s and has Old French and Middle English origins. It has always referred to "the act of informing,” usually in regard to education, instruction, or other knowledge communication.
Example Each student's test score is one piece of data. The average score of a class or of the entire school is information that can be derived from the given data.
QUESTION 3
Illustrate the underlying concepts/components of database management system and information retrieval system using suitable diagram shows the Database Management System (DBMS) components. Source
Coronel, Morris, Rob, Database System – Design, Implementation, and Management, 2013, Course Technology/ Cengage Learning, USA
Five components that make up Database Management System (DBMS).
A. Hardware
Hardware refers to the system physical devices including computer (PCs, supercomputer, server, and workstation), storage devices, network devices (switches, routers, and fibre optics), printers, and other devices (ID readers, thumb scanner, keyboard and so

Software also acts as basic interface or layer between physical database and the system user. This includes DBMS software, Operating Systems (OS), applications programs and DBMS utilities software.
C. People (Users)
The types of users that have access and can retrieve data from databases using application software and interfaces provided by DBMS. This includes System Administrators who oversee database systems general operations, Database administrators that manages and ensure DBMS is working. Database designers design database diagram, System analysts and programmers design and implement the application program and lastly End users who use application program for organization`s using.
D. Procedures
This refers to sets of regulation and instruction used to govern the design and uses of the database that written and enforce by Database administrators. Example, procedures are like owner`s manual how to operate and use DBMS properly and efficiently.
E. Data
Data covers the collection of facts stored in the database. Since data are building blocks of information, it is important to know what data needed into database and how to organize data properly is vital part of database designer`s
A Keyboard allows for you to enter different characters such as letters, numbers and symbols. Each key on a keyboard represents a different character on the computer. There are several different types of keyboards, Ergonomic Keyboards, QWERTY Keyboards, and Braille Keyboards. Another example of an Input Device is a Mouse. A Mouse is a Pointing Device which allows you to move the cursor on the computer.
Components Computers have one or a lot of big or small R-A-M chips inside. RAM chips are a random access memory chip inside, the computer uses it to store information that will be used anytime or used to store something like the copy clipboard(The copy clipboard is the thing that stores what you copy to paste later) to delete/change later. There is also a spinning or solid state hard drive that uses DVD like disks that stores information like your video games, pictures, or other things. A CPU is the thing that your computer uses to do all the processing work, like our brain but not like it. CPU stands central-processing-unit.
4. The sample means from project pass students are not equal and therefore will be statistically significantly different. I would run an independent sample t-Test using an average of the scores from the project pass instruction students as one variable, and an average of the scores of the general education instruction
The dataset used in the analysis is the grades.dat; it was used to analyze the performance of the students in the GPA and the final. The dataset includes information collected from the survey of 105 students and includes variables such as performance and demographic variables. The variable GPA measures the performance
Kernel Structure (Windows) What is a kernel? Basically kernel is a computer program which manages input and output requests from the S/W, and then translates them into data processing instructions for the central process unit (CPU) and other electronic components of a PC. Application Kernel CPU Memory Devices Actually the kernel is the heart of an operating system. The task of this software is to run the programs and provide secure access to the computer’s hardware.
The information or data that needs to be stored could relate to personal employee information that would need to be password protected so only the relevant people can gain access. Only if date if stored in a procedural manner can it be easily retrieved. This can also help if an external body needs to gain access to records for example auditors. Describe the features of different types of systems used for storage and retrieval of information. There are many different ways in which you can store and retrieve information; the main purpose of storing any information is for easy retrieval in the future when it is
1. What are some important steps in interpreting data from high stakes assessments? In order to make assessment data useful teachers must understand what information is being reported and determine if additional information is necessary to understand student performance. Specifically, for assessment results for students with disabilities, teachers would have to identify what accommodations were being used.
I can assume a common person in the 1960 would find information in a library. I think information literacy was despite the fact they did not have the technology like we have now days, it was something people would still have to learn to get accurate information. Newspapers, phone books, radio, library with tons of books and encyclopedias were also part of that era that started the necessity for inventors to create what we have today. Information literacy then and now I think it was the same practice just with the different tools.
Over recent years, the debate of whether or not to continue using standardized testing to evaluate college applicants has been somewhat controversial. Although college may not necessarily ensure success in the future, is not the only path in which success can be found, and is not a good path for every student, a majority of students that graduate high school want to go to college and need to know what it is they need to accomplish before their four years are up. Some of the colleges shifting to the idea of accepting applicants not based on test scores think that the potential to do well in college shouldn’t be based on these things. These argue that personal traits and characteristics are what determine success. Traits like these aren’t truly measurable though.
Assignment: Outline how legislation, policies and procedures relating to health, safety and security influence health and social care settings. Go on to describe how those legislation, policies and procedures promote the safety of individuals in your health or social care setting. Policies, procedures and legislation are found in every establishment. They are required to have them in place in order to protect and keep the employers, employees and service users safe. Legislations in an establishment are a groups of laws set by the government that must be followed otherwise an individual will be prosecuted.
This assignment will help you in your quiz. 1. Identify the main components of an information system. What is a mission- critical system? Information Systems comprise of hardware, software, data, people and other services to connect a company in terms of communication and information.
For students and educators all over America, “standardized testing” is a commonly heard phrase. Students from grade school to high school are typically assessed each year with a state-created test, designed to measure a year’s worth of knowledge in the form of pencilled-in bubbles. Standardized testing has been a routine practice for years, but both students and teachers have recently began questioning if too much emphasis is placed on standardized testing in schools, and if the test is able to fulfill its purpose in the first place (Bhattacharyya, Junot, and Clark para. 2). Standardized testing is an impractical, superficial, and restrictive method of assessment, which suggests that it is not a reliable tool for education and the success of
Rachel, You are absolutely correct that the information literacy requires individuals to recognize when information is needed. I think information literacy is going to be well needed as a base of life log learning theirs always going to be something new to learn or someone’s changing a policy of the process of what needs to be changed. In a criminal justice career part of using literacy would be gathering the information the right way, which I could see sometimes individuals have a difficult time with processing information that is directed to the individual.
Today imagining our world without computer and computer dependent devices is near to impossible. We find these almost everywhere. They have become a necessity and majority of the large-scale work happens by these. Computers are used for selling/buying shares, running a company, finances, writing books, act as a source of information and are now also replacing the television and radios as they can entertain people by music, movies and games and the list continue.
Information literacy helps students recognize misleading, out-of-date, or false information. It also helps them sort through the data and interpret it intelligently. Libraries full of books are still available and a valuable resource for students, but information literacy includes the Internet and beyond. Teachers are involve into it, they act as channel of information.
