Distinguishing team building from team development
1. Introduction
There is a vast difference between “team building” and “team development”. There is often some confusion in the way the terms are used by managers and official and often writers. The ultimate aim of this article is to outline critical differences between team building and team development.
Development should be seen as a process of growth from an initial stage towards execution of possibility or development. The concept of development needs to be considered in the context of project team human resource management. Development can produce obligation and motivation from project team members.

2.1 Team building
Team developments are mostly decided by work requirements and business objectives. There are on site work teams that work together on a day-to-day basis and the cross-functional teams who work on specific projects. Then there is the conditional task force called ‘The implementation team’ created to handle a special task.
Implementation teams basically bring in change. They are comprised of individuals who have the skills and knowledge to implement a new method or process within an organisation either across single or multiple locations. In general, implementation teams have to integrate the specifications developed by the functional experts into a process or facility.
Sometimes the team is formed for the purpose of bringing learning and knowledge to a different market either in the same country or internationally. The objective is to take something that worked very well in one place and transfer it to another in the hope of achieving greater efficiency and productivity across the board. The focus is more long term concentrating on setting up systems for the period of the project. Dispersed and continuous is part of day to day processes of project work. Team development targets generating and improving all the project teams systems to ensure that they support higher performance continuously. (Kinlaw, 1991:25)
It can thus be concluded that the distinction between team building and team development was made to indicate that the two concepts are both important in pursuit of an effective team.

Team building can be pursued through a variety of activities, ranging from the simple and basic, such as one off bonding exercises before or during meetings, to complex, multi-day simulations, trainings or retreats carefully organised by professional associations or companies specialising in such programmes. These latter full scale team building exercises or less intensive variations thereof may include seminars, workshops or conferences. Many team build ideas fall somewhere within this range and can also include an internally planned day out doing active outdoor pursuits such as paintball, rope courses or orienteering. Team building can also be achieved through healthy competition, such as baseball or soccer games organised against other companies or organisations; or through events such as community service projects, held for good socially worthy causes. Teambuilding is now widely recognised and accepted as being a significant and workable variable in many, if not most, group environments where performance is dependent on how well the group unit works together.

An effective team can have many accomplishments and make the impossible happen. Joshua Davis, the author of the magazine article “La Vida Robot,” writes about four undocumented immigrants who came together and beat one of the smartest teams in the country. Walter Isaacson author of the biography, Steve Jobs, explains that Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak came together and created the company, Apple. In both texts, Davis and Isaacson explain that each team member having completely different skills can create a powerful team.

More than 1,250 Lowe's stores in 49 states serve do-it- yourself customers, do-it-for me customers using store's installation services, and commercial customers, including professional contractors, electricians, landscapers, painters, and plumbers. Lowe's carries 40,000 products for home decorating, maintenance, repair, remodeling, and construction. When there is effective working relationship among employees as well as managers, the employees feel that they are respected, and their voice are heard, thereby fostering an enabling workplace full of energy and overall happiness. Effective working relationship between employees enables them to support each other when improvement is called for and helps to develop their esteem.
Blanchard et al. (2007) has suggested that the reason for this approach is that the world of business is rapidly evolving and that the work required of organisations is constantly changing and become more complex. Therefore many organisations prefer to have a team of multiple people to cope with demands of change and to support the level of knowledge required.
INTRODUCTION The word ‘team’ can be defined as a group of people working together towards a common goal. A team also generally is known as a group of people with different skills and different tasks, who works together on a common project, services, or goal. Then, the important thing in teamwork is ‘collaboration’, which is the act of working effectively with others to achieve a common goal. Collaboration acts as the lifeblood in the team, even the team is not large enough, but the collaboration is required.
A Project Leader, as opposed to a manager that manages the team by bending it to fit the project, guides from the front and mainly aims to realise the potential of the team by using skills and resources at his/her disposal to achieve the best from the team (Curlee & Gordon, 2011). The complexity theory is furthermore about accepting chaos in some stages of the project life cycle, but in such a manner that allows the project manager a level of individuality to move a project forward. Hence, complexity is about learning to accept certain unknowns with flexibility and grace. (Curlee & Gordon, 2011). A leader who motivates individuals can assist in creating a controlled hurricane that can conquer complex tasks.
In essence, teamwork can be defined as a group of people working in the same direction and for a common purpose. Teamwork requires individuals be a team player and to be able to work well with others; after all, there is no “I” in “Team”! As with any endeavour, we faced some initial setbacks. With this being our first college team assignment, we were all treading on unfamiliar territory.
The dictionary definition of teamwork is: 'the process of working collaboratively with a group of people to achieve a common goal. ' Our world runs largely on interdependence. Companies today know that effective products or services need multiple skills to be created and therefore better solutions, services, or products depend on better teamwork. More and more organizations nowadays assess teamwork skills before recruitment, yet our education has very rarely helped us to develop teamwork skills.
One works on developing an annual report while the other works on setting up customer acquisition. A team is two or more individuals that are connected and work on same goals. The principle reason that motivated me to pursue the MSc Project Management course is the appeal and challenge Project Managers experience in delivering assignments they undertake in their career. The qualification, indeed, lead to very smart and modern careers for graduates who love challenges, creativity, leadership and success. As a graduate of Mathematics, I have cultivated these features in my student life. Now, for my master level of study, I would like to take my chance of attaining formal skills in the area of project management. From my research, I see that Project Management is the application of skills, knowledge and techniques to meet the objectives of a project and stake holder’s expectations.
