Shakespeare’s Macbeth is a dramatic play in which many people are murdered and tensions run high. The duo of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth pounces onto every opportunity to become the hierarchy. They have two quite different personalities, but over the duration of the play, the personalities switch over. In the beginning, Lady Macbeth is manipulative and Macbeth is scared and guilty. The tables turn over the bumpy road of crime, breakdowns and fights. Lady Macbeth is the puppet master behind Macbeth, pulling the strings and controlling him until he becomes evil, just like her. The powers of Lady Macbeth and Macbeth shift over the play because of their guilt and amount of control over themselves. Near the beginning of the play, Macbeth is told that he is a future king. When Lady Macbeth brings up killing Duncan to Macbeth, he immediately rejects the idea. They are both ambitious and superstitious. In the play, it says, “Stay, you imperfect speakers, tell me more…. With such prophetic greeting, speak, I charge you. (1.3.71,79).” When the witches tell Macbeth that he is going to be a future king, he believes them, asking for more details and believing that one day he will become the ruler. When he tells Lady Macbeth, she goes on a rant about how much life is going to be amazing while Macbeth is king, and how she loves him because he is powerful and almighty. This shows that they are superstitious and will therefore believe anything that the sisters say. When they told him about the apparitions, he actually believed that they would happen, which it ended up that they did. After the original fortune is told, they do anything and everything in their power to become the hierarchy in Scotland.
