Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, written by Rick Riordan, is about 12 year-old Percy discovering who he was and that his dad is Poseidon; Greek god of the sea. An interesting character in the novel was Grover Underwood. Grover is an interesting character because he is Percy’s protector, he is hard-working, and he is thoughtful. Grover –who is Percy’s best friend and protector– is an important character in the book. Going undercover, Grover was on a mission to scout out anyone who could possibly be a Half-Blood attending Yancy Academy; that’s when he met Percy. Both became good friends but then an incident happened when their class was on a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum. Everyone had almost convinced Percy that he was hallucinating about the incident but he overheard a conversation about it between Grover and Mr Brunner. Percy heard something about a summer solstice deadline and asked Grover about it when the pair were headed to New York City. Grover tried lying but couldn’t so he answered with “Look, Percy, the truth is, I-I kind of have to protect you.” Grover had to stay with Percy and keep him from dying while he went to visit his mom after being kicked out of school. Since Grover failed his first time getting a searcher's license to look for Pan, he was granted a second chance but it depended on the fate of Percy. That meant Grover would have to accompany Percy on whatever quest he went on. Scared but wanted to prove himself to be of help, he said “If.. if you’re serious about wanting me along, I won’t let you down.” Throughout the quest, he bravely stood up to Medusa, helped Annabeth and Percy when they were stuck on the Tunnel of Love ride, and discovered his gifted flying shoes were evil. Proving himself granted him a searcher’s license and Percy came out of the quest alive in the
