Motivation can be defined as the force within a person that affect the direction(what a person is trying to do), effort(how hard a person is willing to work) and persistence(how long they are willing to try) of voluntary behaviour in the workplace. It is important for managers to understand what motivates their employees as it leads to higher productivity, lower absenteeism and overall a highly successful and profitable business. There are many theories on motivation including Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs by Arnold Howard Maslow and The Two-Factor Theory by Frederick Herzberg. I will be discussing both theories in detail and I will be outlining the similarities and differences between the two theories.

In my opinion the description Locke gives on how people’s behaviour is motivated by their internal intentions, objectives, or goals is the most realistic way to describe how I am motivated. The Goal-Setting theory states the best way to motivate people is to set challenging and specific goals. This makes sense to me as when you have assignments you are motivated to get it done as there is a time limit and you will lose marks if it’s not handed in on time. These are short terms goals which need to be achieved in order for you to achieve the overall objective. The overall goal for me is to get a degree after three years, because I want this I will be driven to go to lectures, complete my assignments and study for my exams. It is clear to me that the explanation this theory gives me on motivation will encourage me to worker harder in college as it proves to me that setting goals helps motivate people. I also feel setting goals will help me become more organised which in turn will help me in my college
