Before working in the health care field, soon to be registered nurses have to follow procedures in order to achieve their current proposition. RNs are included as one of the certified occupations from predetermined standards, which is required by taking courses and final examinations. Students must graduate from an accredited program and obtaining an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in nursing. The nursing degree completion is subject to the will of determination in accomplishing the courses in two years to achieve an associate degree or four years for a bachelor’s degree. After graduating, candidates are advised to register for the computerized NCLEX-RN examination for a cost of $200.
Competency Goal III Competency Goal III is to support social and emotional development and to provide guidance. There are three main areas to succeed in this, the things are self-concept, sociality, and guidance. One focus on Competency Goal III is self-concept. Children’s environments support the development of positive self-concepts.
This type of care is referred to as client centered care, which is to put the Veteran and their goals, not the disease, at the center of care (The Department of Veteran Affairs, 2011). According to Bertakis and Azari (2011), “Patient-centered care is associated with decreased utilization of health care services and lower total annual charges. Reduced annual medical care charges may be an important outcome of medical visits that are patient-centered”. Patient care experience and the need for improvement toward patient-centered care is aligned with nursing excellence (Stimpfel, Sloane, McHugh, & Aiken, 2015). With the expectation of nursing excellence, the role of the nurse has expanded over the years with the current trend of focus on policy change. These policy changes are geared towards changes in patient care which will have a positive impact on patient outcomes. The nurse can become a leader in advocacy with the goal of raising awareness to health care concerns (Mason, Gardner, Outlaw & O'Grady, 2016). The purpose of this post is to describe two organizations which impact the practice of nursing and show the role these organizations play in nurse education and research.
Patient centered care focuses on getting to know the older person as an individual such as their values, Aspirations, health, social needs, preferences and providing care specific to their needs. It enables the older person to make decisions on what kind of options with assistance available, promoting his/her Autonomy and independence. It involves them in such way to be included in shared decisions between healthcare teams and families, so the can be control with a choice of specific care / services. It provides information that is tailored for the individual in order to assist them in decision making based on evidence, helping them to understand their options and consequences of this. There is a high significance for a nursing student completing their degree in nursing to start their career as a nurse practitioner. Nursing students must prepare to become nationally certified by an accredited body upon completion of their schooling in order to advance their career (AANP, 2016). This academic accreditation process helps to show that the students have met the requirements to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in their population focus testing. The scope of practice will be affected based on the certification that the practitioner obtains. If the Nurse Practitioner obtains a certification as a nurse specialists in pediatrics, oncology, geriatrics, emergency medicine, etc.
The advancement in medical science, technology and complexity of the current patient care, demands the nurses to be prepared with the knowledge and skills in Assessment and Intervention, Effective Communication, Critical Thinking, Patient Relationship, Leadership, Management and Teaching. As the required competency increases, the curriculum needs to prepare the nursing graduates to have these core competencies as outlined by COPA model (Competency Outcomes and Performance Assessment)” (Lenburg, 1999 a, b). The BSN curriculum is tailored to accommodate these professional development requirements, the modern era demands that incorporate a broad scope of practice, giving a better edge in competency compared to an ADN, especially in Critical Thinking. A noteworthy point is that the differences in clinical competencies of a BSN and ADN are few compared to management, leadership, decision making and communication competencies.
In 1870, nursing had been learnt from the mothers to the daughters. Now it has been changed to the school education that the students learn the nursing skill from the nursing professionals and the education programs of nursing keep developing from the 1900s to now that the diploma school has been changed to BSN, AND, and the postgraduate school has also been replaced by Master degree, CNL, PhD, DNSc, ND and DNP (Martha, n.d.). Therefore, the people have more chance to learn and be the nurse. Education programs also produce more and more professional nurses for the world to develop the nursing profession. Nursing education provides the nursing theories and practical training for the students to help them learn the knowledge of nursing and their duties, in order to protect patient safety and the safety of the public.
In the leadership in care delivery course, we were assigned to a hospital to perform clinical hours and provide care to four patients. Additionally, the purpose of this paper is to explain and provide examples on how our patient care included the concepts of Quality and Safety Education for Nursing (QSEN) competencies, delegation, handoff reporting, and a reflection of the clinical experience. Quality and Safety Education for Nursing (QSEN) Competencies QSEN consists of six competencies: patient centered care, quality improvement, teamwork and collaboration, safety, informatics, and evidence based practice. To provide patient-centered care, I had to educate the patient when administering medications on why the patient was taking the medication and side effects. Care had to be individualized with each patient and it included providing respect with his or her decisions in their care.
Learning such skills should start at university [12,13]. This helps them efficiently apply theoretical knowledge acquired at university in real-world situations where they are expected to solve patient ’s problems . Given that the main goal of education in medical sciences including nursing is to develop professional competence, decision-making skills and problem-solving, nursing education is responsible for creating an environment where students can learn and acquire cognitive, affective and psychomotor skills. Therefore, nursing students are provided with practical skills, strategies, and approaches so that they will able to solve patient’s problems in real-world situations in the future
The second key aspect related to expertise,the nurses must have technical skills in order to provide effective and safe care. The third aspect mentioned that nurses must have communicative capabilities. The nurses serve as spokespersons for patients who are often in vulnerable positions. The nurses are easily accessible and can act as a link between the patient and other professions.
Providing care to a patient is a particularly challenging process that requires a great deal of effort from a nurse. A nurse’s ability to give quality care to their patient is an important aspect to a patient’s life both now and in the future. As such, nurses must exhibit specific qualities in their practice in order to maintain the best standard of care for their patients.
