DIGLOSSIC TEST: AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD IN ASSESSING STUDENT PERFORMANCE IN BIOLOGY
Author: Palmes, Harry R.
ABSTRACT
This quantitative, quasi-experimental research aimed to investigate the effects of using diglossic language as an assessment tool in assessing student performance in Biology. This involves 40 students divided into control and experimental groups. The participants were assigned to either pure English type of examination (control) or diglossic type of examination (experimental) by matched-pairing according to their mean grades on English and Science and Technology in the first grading quarter. The teacher-made achievement tests were of two types, one uses a pure English language and the other uses diglossic language. Both groups

That is why incorporation of mother tongue is encouraged. Given that the inclusion of mother tongue in the instruction was now adopted by teachers and may have a positive effect on learning, still assessments/tests are still in the English format. If they got low on the assessment will it justify that there was no learning occurred?
Reality tells us that there are still students who have weak foundations/ very low in reading and comprehending English Language. What if students have already the understanding of the concepts in a specific topic, but they could not express themselves or could not communicate effectively in English language? Are we depriving them of their ideas just because of a language barrier? If the teacher is incorporating mother tongue in their instruction, is it appropriate that they assess the student in different language? Are we really assessing the value of learning?
This research aimed to find out the incorporation mother tongue as a form of assessment as an alternative method for measuring student achievement in Science subject, to be more specific in Biology. Thus, the researcher use the term “Diglossic Test” (Diglossic or Diglossia is when the language used if of two varieties classified as low and high) as the intervention for this action

Knowing the rules of science communication is crucial to understanding science concepts. It is because scientific goals and thought processes are closely interlinked with the language. This study implies that the use of diglossic (two varieties of language) language as a form of assessment has an effect and could be use an alternative way in measuring student performance in Biology. Many studies support this idea, but the actual use of this method is still discourage for it has been always in English language assessment in the Philippines has been patterned. The results agree with Tan and Soong (2006) that the crucial problem lies in the language used to communicate science concepts and that many students are put off by so-called scientific “jargon” and the seemingly complex sentence constructions. According to them the same kind of complexities also confuses students in learning science in English, like Chinese, French and German. Many of them might not be confused by the complexity of science concepts, but by the way, they are communicated. According to Duran (1988) for a student who has never spoken a foreign language, only a little perspective information was yield by standardized aptitude and achievement tests and this test only shows little or no
and I go back to make the calculation in Spanish. I noticed that took me longer for because of translation. However, Sousa (2015) said that we need to be careful about assuming if a student has a problem with language will have problems with calculations, and vice versa because language and mathematical reasoning areas are in two distinct parts of the
The Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System is an assessment developed for students of grade levels 1-12 which will demonstrate students’ English proficiency. It is federally mandatory for English Language learnings to take this assessment to find out the annual progress that the English Language Learner students make in the English Language. The Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment began after the Reading Proficiency Tests in English also known as (RPTE) needed federal requirements for also functioning for other grade levels and language domains. The Reading Proficiency Tests in English were created in 1999-2000 for English Language Learners that were in the third grade to the twelve grade. The Reading Proficiency Tests
What is the evidence that early childhood is a sensitive time for learning language? Social interaction, myelination, brain maturation, and scaffolding are evidence that early childhood is a sensitive time for learning language. In addition, children in early childhood are considered “language sponges” because they absorb every bit of language they hear or read. How does fast-mapping aid the language explosion?
It is a difficult language to master, he said, first in Spanish and then in English” (Diaz 124). In fact, this
A language sample analysis (LSA) is a tool that generates the coding and transcriptions of a language sample to document the language used every day in various speaking situations (Miller, Andriacchi, & Nockerts, 2016). Language samples are typically 50-100 words in length and are voice-recorded and then transcribed by the clinician. Language samples are done using spontaneous speech, such as typical conversation, or narrative contexts, such as story or event recalls (Miller, Andriacchi, & Nockerts, 2016). The speech-language pathologist (SLP) will take the recording and write out, in the exact words of the child and clinician, every utterance (Bowen, 2011). The SLP will then "code" the sample.

The children learning a second language for develop skills that will help create opportunities in the future and ability to communicate with others in different situations. It will most certainly In addition to the language skills of children with learning a second language, and learning the cultural differences helps. Includes a variety of educational and career opportunities as well. However, children learning a second language in the early teens It can learn faster and learn the lesson faster also. But it does not mean if passed, then a teenager.
The teacher has tried to use English as much as possible with her students. She used English when she explained the material and gave an instruction for the students, for example when she asked to the student to ‘listen and repeat after her’, ‘open page 49’, ‘submit your homework’ something like that. In my opinion, it is good enough because indirectly she invites the students to use English. But, sometimes I saw some students who didn’t understand the meaning of the teacher’s instruction, as the result they asked to the other
Based on the identification of the above approaches, it is obvious that more effort on the part of the student (dialectic and heuristic methods) may diminish scientific intensity. On the contrary, this intensity can increase by using the didactic method. However, students have been observed to have passive roles in this method, so they do not externalise the questions that the topics explained by the
Foreign language should not be required at the elementary level because students need to focus on the core subjects, like math, reading, science and history. That is a lot for a young student to handle and expecting them to learn a language should make it more difficult for a student. The core subjects are more essential in everyday life and can lead to more jobs in the future. Students also might have trouble learning the rules of English along with another language. English and other languages have some similar grammar rules, so they could get them confused when trying to learn the grammar rules of English and learning another language.
Students have difficulties learning when a class is given in another language or when
The development of literacy and language is a continual progress within a person. This development is one that starts from the moment a child is born (Hurst and Joseph, 2000). This development is promoted within the home environment and is extended within the early years’ classroom domain. Literacy and language development is comprised of four strands, which are listening, speaking, reading & writing. These four factors are in constant interaction together and are constantly developing within the person (Saffran, Senghas and Trueswell, 2001).
Research Questions From the literature review, it was established that there were several factors affecting language learning and acquisition. More specifically, it was revealed that factors such as exposure at an early age, motivation, attitudes, incentives and educational system can influence language acquisition. However, most of the research were conducted in the west and were focused on students as subjects to the study and foreigners working in the country where they need to learn the language to lengthen their range of employment opportunity.
