While Charlotte drank coffee in Charleston, South Carolina, her husband James prepared to move from the Tent City field hospital, near Petersburg, Virginia, to the Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond. Initially, their community was 80% Caucasian, 40% African American, and 5% Hispanic. An example of how HDMC’s values and this nurses values are similar is observed in a service that HDMC offers called “Nobody dies alone” (Hi Desert Medical Center, 2015). The service acknowledges how difficult death is and that family is not always about to be with a patient. The service nobody dies alone has volunteers who come and stay with patients twenty-four hours a day and is there to support the patient during their ending moments. Privacy, dignity and humanity is respected and the patient is treated as a dying human in need of comfort rather than a person occupying a bed.

In 2005, a family friend by the name of Randy Birdsong was a patient at Audie L. Murphy Memorial VA Hospital located in San Antonio, Texas. The Veteran Affairs (VA) medical staff was performing surgery on his abdomen. After the surgery, he was notified that there was insufficient space to accommodate his continued care. The V.A. advised him to keep his wound clean with a fresh roll of gauze, and sent him on his merry way. Based upon this premise, the mission statement for West TN Healthcare shows that the organization intends to provide health care that is both exceptional and compassionate and that by doing so its purpose is to improve the health and well-being of the communities surrounding it (WTH.org, n.d.). West TN Healthcare’s mission statement does meet the criteria set forth as a viable mission statement.

This philosophy reflects the lesson in Matthew 7:12, which states, “ So everything, do to others what you would have them do to you, for this sums up the Law and the Prophets”. I personally value the characteristic of kindness, which encompasses active listening, professionalism, and accountability. In order to be kind, nurses must actively invest time in their patients and express to them that they care for them and their family members. My belief is that if my family member was in the hospital I would want the nurse to show kindness to them, therefore I will show compassion to others family members. I value the art of kindness, because sometimes it is not easy to show love to patients who are combative or disrespectful.
