Dionysus
Dionysus was the Greek god of wine, theatre, grape harvest, and ritual madness. He is a mortal, also known as Bacchus. Dionysus is the son of Zeus and the Theban princess Semele. He is the only god to have a mortal parent. Dionysus was born in Thebes. He may have been worshipped by the Mycenaeans as early as 1500-100 BC. Demeter, the Goddess of Corn, and Dionysus were the great gods of the earth. They were worshipped at at a small town near Athens called Eleusis. Some of the symbols he represents are leopard skins, cheetahs, the grapevine, and panthers. Many festivals and performances were thrown in Dionysus’ honor.
One Greek myth Dionysus is featured in about Dionysus, Ariadne, and some pirates. Dionysus could shape shift, so one day he shape shifted into a young man with many riches and beautiful clothing. Some pirates saw him and thought they could sell him for lots of money as slave, and kidnapped him. The pirates tied Dionysus to their ship’s mast. Dionysus used his magical powers to push the rope away. One of the pirates noticed he wasn’t tied to the mast anymore, and tied him again even tighter. Dionysus sent thick vines twisting around the ship. Dionysus pushed the ropes off once more, and shape shifted into a lion. The pirates were scared and jumped overboard. One pirate tried to jump off, but his feet were planted on the ship somehow. Dionysus ordered the pirate to drop him off to the nearby island, Naxos. The pirate brought him there, and Dionysus saw
