Dionysus was the greek god of wine, theatre, fertility and celebrations. His father was Zeus, god of the sky and all olympians, and his mother was the princess of Theban, Semele. She was a mortal, making Dionysus the only god born of a mortal parent. Before he was born Semele was tricked by Zeus jealous ex wife, Hera, to have Zeus swear on the river styx to make a promise to Semele. Semele asked to see Zeus in his true form, though Zeus already knew what she would ask of him. He did as he promised because he was sworn by the river styx, and Semele burned until there was nothing left but ash because of his glory. Zeus managed to save the fetal Dionysus by stitching him into his thigh and keeping him there until he was ready to be born. Since …show more content…
The titans succeeded but Dionysus was then brought back to life by Rhea and Zeus gave him to the mountain nymphs to live there, be raised and protected. Dionysus had many siblings, most of whom were greek gods as well. Ares, Athena, Apollo, Artemis, Aphrodite, Hebe, Hermes, Heracles, Helen of Troy, Hephaestus, Perseus, Minos, The Muses, and the Graces were all his brothers and sisters. He was one of the only gods who lived on Mount Olympus, but he spent a lot of his time wandering around the woods with the Maenads. The Maenards were wild women who were Dionysus sacred follows. They would roam the woods clothed in deer hide and hunt with Dionysus while the rest of his followers worshipped him. They would eventually go insane, tearing apart and eating the animals they could find …show more content…
His sacred animals were a panther, a tiger, a bull, and serpents. Then his sacred plants were a grapevine, ivy, bindweed, and pine trees. Some of his symbols were a thyrsos, which was a staff with a pinecone on the top, a drinking cup, and a crown of ivy as he is seen wearing one in most of the drawings, paintings, and statues that you see of him. Although his greek name is Dionysus he is also known by Bacchus, which is his roman name, Lyeaus, and Liber. Dionysus personalty varied but he was mostly witty, charming, kind but cruel when needed, and understanding. He also represented death and
The largest festival in Ancient Greece was the festival of Dionysus. This celebration lasted from early March to late April. The Greeks would sing, dance, and celebrate their God, Dionysus. The goat was seen as a symbol of Dionysus. Men would dress up as figures with horns and tails, which they called satyrs.
Dionysus’ story is very unique among most greek gods, and he has two origin stories that are very similar (E.O.B.). In all greek myths, he is said to be killed by Hera’s enviousness towards Semele (E.O.B.). Although, there are two different stories on how he was killed. In one, he is slain viciously and eaten by the titans. In another, he is killed by his father, Zeus
Dionysiac values are vindicated by the illumination of the consequence of a mortal acting so impiously towards this god: a gruesome, violent death. Dionysus is more powerful than Pentheus, something the mortal does not reconcile, and he pays the price for this irreverence towards Dionysus. The people of Thebes do not understand than Dionysus is a god and does not abide by Earthly concepts of justice and fairness. The violent conclusion also serves as a means for Dionysus to exact revenge on the non-believers of Thebes in that if Pentheus hadn’t been excessive in his hatred for the Bacchae, and had joined Tiresias and Cadmus in their worship of Dionysus, he would have evaded a terrible amount of suffering.

Dionysus, god of nature, saw that man was dying from the winter wind. He came up with a way to protect man from this. He went through many materials that could possibly warm up humans. After multiple trials and errors, he finally came across sheep’s wool, which would change humans' lives forever. Dionysus needed to find some way to convert the sheep’s wool into something that would fit man, so Dionysus spent many days in Olympus when he suddenly decided to structure the wool based off of man’s body.
As we learn in lecture a cultus is an established rite or customs associated with gods and goddesses. It emphasis on practices rather than beliefs. That is what Dionysus tries to bring to Thebes. Is not common how Dionysus opposes the usual view of gender, race and divinity in the book. As he says: “I came here- my first Greek city- only after I had started initiations there and set those places dancing, so that mortals would see me clearly as divine.”
The myth of Dionysus. God of wine. This myth tries to teach if you are kind you will be rewarded with good things in life. Zeus had another kid named Dionysus behind Hera's back, his wife. She was mad about this and then Pirates took the child from the shore.
Odysseus is the symbol of intelligent in the story. He considered more perfectly and thoughtful than his colleagues. Both text and video demon that Odysseus and his crews were going to landed on a secret island and find out the truth of it, but they accidentally got attract into a monster's cave and got beset with crisis. Although
Dionysus seemed to represent the human mind as we know it and the unconscious mind as we see in the human psyche. What I took from the reading is that Dionysus had many hardships in life that allowed him to be run by his emotions. He wanted to achieve autonomy. He ruled wine, drama and he ruled life and death. Even though Dionysus knew all of these life indulgences should be handled in moderation, he sometimes over indulged in intoxication.
Dionysus and the pirates Although Dionysus is known as the god of wine, that doesn’t mean he I just some guy who knows a lot about wine. He is a god just like Zeus or Poseidon who possesses a great deal of power and if need be can use that power to hurt or destroy.
The constellation that I chose was Hercules because not only was Hercules my favourite movie as a child, but it was one of the most interesting things that I learned about in muggle schooling. This constellation was first discovered in 1714 by an English astronomer, Edmond Halley, which was also included in Messier's catalog as Messier 13 on June 1, 1764. Hercules is the 5th biggest constellation in the sky, although the constellation has no first or second magnitude stars. The brightest star within this constellation is Beta Herculius (also known as Kornephoros), it is a yellow giant of magnitude 2.8 and is about 148 light years away from Earth. The creation myth behind this constellation started with the birth of Hercules, the son of Zeus
Hercules' drowning guilt tracked down Apollo and begged for punishment. Apollo ordered Hercules to perform the twelve labors for the Mycenaean king Eurystheus. After twelve years, Hercules completed the tasks and married his second wife, who killed him, but after he died he was given immortality. The original myth of Hercules was appealing to audiences at the time because it told a story of hardship and recompense and had a character who was determined to right his wrongs. The film is appealing to audiences nowadays because Renny Harlin modified Hercules to be a brave and honorable hero who fought for justice and love.
Though he may be ridiculously unintelligent and emotionally unstable, he had a burning passion for justice and making things right. No matter how many people he had accidently killed, he always made it right by doing more and more good deeds. He was constantly working to become the best man he could. Though he couldn’t think properly, he was a man of his word. Hercules and Theseus both did great deeds, but Hercules just achieved more because of his strength.
Hera planted seeds of doubt in Semele’s mind to get back at Zues for being unfaithful to her but this had an outcome of suspicions in Zues’ divine nature. Imagery is also presented in this story by providing a visual representation in someone’s mind of the dreadful events that took place after Hera planted seeds of doubt into Semele’s mind as we learn about the effects of Hera’s actions upon Semele. Candidly Zeus wanted to please Semele in any way possible and bring all her wishes to life so he swore upon the sacred river of the gods, though that wasn’t enough for Semele, she demanded Zues’s dignity under the power of his lightning and flashes. The birth of Dionysus reveals “ so he revealed himself immediately, lightning appeared and everything Zues’ lightning touched shocked and moved, enveloped in the fire without a doubt, Zeus was the supreme god of Mount Olympus”. This is very descriptive in the way that it also visually impairs someone to think about the scene and envision the fire and how powerful Zues’ lightning strikes must be and the motion they were struck
The Bacchae begins with Dionysos presenting his business in Thebes, posing as a mortal priest of the Bacchae, “For Thebes must fully
