In a story an author can describe the characters by using a direct or indirect presentation. The effect of using these presentations help us see how the characters are like and imagine what they might do in certain situations. In an indirect presentation a character is revealed by their actions or by their dialogue in the story. In a direct presentation the character is described by the author or by another character in the story. Some stories might use direct presentation and others might use indirect presentation, but in the story “The Most Dangerous Game” by Richard Connell; the author uses both indirect and direct presentation to describe his characters.
The author first uses indirect presentation at the beginning of the story to describe some of the story’s characters. With an indirect presentation the author allows the audience to understand a character's reason of being by describing them through their actions or the through text. My first example to why the most dangerous game uses indirect presentation is when it’s main character, Rainsford, falls off the boat and “a certain cool-headedness had come to him, it was not the first time he had been in a tight place…

In direct presentation the author describes what the characters are like or they have another character in the story describe the character. For example, “The first thing Rainsford's eyes discerned was the largest man Rainsford ever seen - a gigantic creature, solidly made and black-bearded to the waist.” (Connell p.71). This direct statement made by the author allows the reader to interpret the character’s personalities. Another example would be the description of Ivan; “Ivan is an incredibly strong fellow, remarked the general, but he has the misfortune to be deaf and dumb.” (Connell p.72). In this quote Ivan is being described by another character which shows the direct presentation being
Personification, juxtaposition, irony, and imagery are not the only devices used, as the author also uses antithesis to show the contrast between characters personalities before and during the
An example of the author using indirect characterization is when Hassan is being attacked following the kite-fighting tournament, Amir doesn't take any action to help him because all he is thinking about is the kite, calling it, "my key
In the following paragraphs I will use the main points to present Hurst using indirect characterization in the story “The Scarlet Ibis” throughout 4 quotes and explanations. The thesis states, Hurst uses indirect characterization to teach readers that selfishness can have positive and negative outcomes. Positive outcomes can come from selfishness Brother teaches doodle to walk because he is embarrassed that doodle’s crippled.
In Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game,” the setting is a crucial aspect of making the plot believable. For example, the false channel leading to the island is so vital to the plot because it makes the story plausible. General Zaroff intrigues Rainsford by showing him the brilliantly gleaming lights that “‘indicate a channel . . . where there’s none’” (8).
In “The Most Dangerous Game” Connell uses indirect characterization to show that Rainsford is selfish, humane, and highly skilled. The reader gets a better physical description of General Zaroff. There is not a physical description of Rainsford. General Zaroff Is more fully characterized,Richard Connell, planned for Rainsford to be the dynamic character. Zaroff is physically portrayed more than Rainford and his belonging are better depicted.
It’s a method where the author creates, describes, develops a character's actions and and thoughts. There are two ways that an author can present a character. Direct presentation, the method in which the author by analysis, tells readers directly what a character is like, or has another character do it. On the other hand, indirect presentation
Although these lines are also an instance of characterization, they are an excellent example of imagery as well. King’s description supplies us with a very distinct mental image of the man in the black suit, that the reader can continue to visualize as they read the
The rhetorical strategies and stylistic choices used in paragraphs one through three of Brent Staples’ essay, “Just Walk On By,” and paragraphs nine through ten of Judith Ortiz Cofer’s essay, “The Myth of the Latin Woman,” are all used to describe the authors’ experiences with racism. However, the individual methods they use differ in the scope and the detail of the events they describe. Staples describes his experiences with racism he had over an entire year, while Cofer describes a single event in much greater detail. This difference results in readers of Staples’ essay gaining an understanding of how widespread of a problem racism is, and readers of Cofer’s essay gaining an in depth understanding of how just how awful dealing with racism can be.
The characterization of the characters come from how the author establishes how each character presents its knowledge about
“No animal had a chance with me... I had to invent a new animal” (7), General Zaroff brags to the captivated Rainsford in Richard Connell’s “The Most Dangerous Game.” At the heart of the story is a fight for survival: winner takes all and survival of the fittest. General Zaroff’s perverse thinking creates a need in the reader to find out how the plot will unfold. The author’s use of suspend disbelief and imagery create anticipation in the story.
Did you know that authors use many different literary devices to tell a story? A literary device is a technique writers use to make their stories unique and interesting. Literary devices like simile, metaphor, suspense, personification, allusion, irony, foreshadowing, and imagery are used in lots of stories. In the short story ¨The Most Dangerous Game”, Richard Connell uses literary devices such as suspense and simile to help the reader gain a clear understanding of the story. In this essay, I will provide two examples of literary devices used throughout Richard Connell’s short story.
Connell uses imagery to show the reader how intense and fearful Rainsford feels in the story. For instance, Zaroff first look to Rainsford was “menacing look” (17) This quote is imagery because it describing the look in his eyes did not change and it was a menacing look also. Another example for imagery would be when “Ivan conducted him was in many ways remarkable.”
For example, in the third paragraph, when the officers have almost finished their search and Poe writes, “They sat, and while I answered cheerily, they chatted of familiar things.” (Poe 24-26) In this quote the police officers seem to be relaxed and convinced of the narrator’s innocence. They talk to him of familiar and innocent topics probably not-at-all related to their investigation. This clearly is an example of indirect characterization because the fact that the cops are talking to a would-be suspect with complete relaxation shows the confident and calm character of the narrator.
Direct characterization tells the audience what the personality of a character is. It actually tells you why that person is how it is in the story why he is mean or why he is a lonely, caring, loving person. Indirect Characterization means that the author shows thing that reveal the personality of a character and there are five different methods of Indirect characterization. (read*write*think 1) Characterization helps the author to make his characters.
