In comparison to an all-terrain vehicle (ATV), a dirt bike “feels twice as intense, and it yields a deep appreciation and respect for the raw power of the machine between your legs¨ (Imhof 1). Any dirt bike rider has felt the respect for the raw power and the appreciation of all the benefits of a dirt bike. The types of dirt bikes mentioned in this are racing dirt bikes, the high end. Racing ATVs, also known as four wheelers or quads, are also considered to be high end - best of the racing class. Both dirt bikes and ATVs are gas vehicles with suspension and knobby tires, however, they differ greatly by having either two wheels or four-wheels. The benefits of riding a dirt bike far outweigh those of an ATV due to their lighter-weight, safety features, and dirt bikes can provide a better workout than ATVs. …show more content…

Dirt bikes are nimbler and faster due to fewer components and less added weight on the frame (Parr 1). Due to the less components and less weight, a dirt bike will be easier to maneuver than a ATV. Dirt bikes are small and powerful. The 2 stroke engine of a dirt bike will allow it to accelerate quickly to high speeds (Parr 3). ATVs are big and have power but will not accelerate quickly due to the extra mass from their heavy wheels, larger frame, and engine. Where as dirtbikes are small a powerful because of their lightness. Weighing in at 1000 pounds, ATVs pose a risk to the rider during a situation where the vehicle rolls onto the rider as a result from a crash (Harmer 1). No dirt bike weighs near 1000 pounds and they not physically able to roll over the rider because dirt bikes are flat on each side.
