I took the Disability IAT and Gender Career IAT, for I am pursing a bachelor in special education, and I wanted to confirm if I stereotyped women by associating them to family instead of career. For the Disability IAT I was surprised to find out that have a slight preference for abled persons over disabled persons. Based on the results of this IAT test, I would say that I am in the acceptance phase of the DMIS because I have the ability to recognize and appreciate the cultural difference between abled persons and disabled persons in my own terms, yet with a subtle preference for abled persons. I do agree with the results of the latter, for I know that I have a slight automatic association for male with family and female with career. I think part of it is because I believe that women should be more focused in their career and not focused entirely in family. I believe that both men and women should focus enough in their career and family meaning that family or career should not be associated with a single gender. Men and women need to find a balance between career and family, so that they can both benefit from both. This survey can give a general understanding on your attitudes toward certain topics or cultures; therefore, it could be beneficial to clarify the attitude of a person toward a specific group of people. As Baynton discusses disability as a justification for inequality, I view it in the sense of a social concept of disability that sets the platform for discrimination and violence against the minority groups. This concept has been implemented in U.S. history to allow discriminatory practices against the minorities to occur. Basically, women, individuals from different races, and ethnic minorities were labeled as disabled as well to interpret inequality as a positive concept. For example, there was justification for slavery in which African Americans did not have the required intelligence which made them incapable of equality with other Americans. This assumption was ascribed to physical causes and differences that were visible in their race.

Life comes with the difficulty of trying to manage family and career at the same time. In the article, “Why Women Still Can’t Have It All,” the author Anne-Marie Slaughter is explaining how tough it is to balance family and career together. You have to take out time for your kids or else they will drift away from you, but you also have your job to handle or else you will lose that. Women have not yet received the fairness with men in workforce. I believe that it is tough for a women to handle her family and career together, and men get recognized more than women in the workforce.

Jaziah Shipp “Disabilities” I have experienced being under many labels. With all of these labels the excruciating painful times were harder when I was just finding out that I was adopted wondering “do my birth parents even love me”, “who is my real parent”, and “why didn’t she want me”. When I was in elementary school I was labeled with a speech disability. School became a big issue in my life. I was so hurt when I had to present in front of the class.
Gender roles are prevalent in American culture. Yet, the gender roles have adapted through the social changes because gender roles are socially constructed. Previously, gender roles used to be distinct and defined, for example, women have babies and men go to war (Policing Gender). The primary income provider of the family has shifted, in various households, to the women, while the man stays at home with the children. In a study done by the Pew Research Center, in 1960s eleven percent of women were the primary monetary provider of the family.
Disabled people who do manage to make their way into the work force tend to encounter numerous disadvantages such as advancement and on average earn around one quarter of the income of their able bodied counterparts (Barnes, Mercer & Shakespeare 1999, p.110). Reports online mentioned that 87% of people think that disabled people should be treated equally. The people who opposed this statement felt that the disabled use their disability as a free ride to an easy life. Most of my friends mentioned that their parents would object them to befriend those with disabilities as they feel that they would affect their well being and exam results . Albeit disappointed, I knew that it was an existing issue. I feel that being disabled is neither especially cursed nor especially blessed .
