Society utilizes Instagram to upload self-images, known as “selfies” to be recognized by others, gain likes and followers to become “Instagram famous.” Facebook is another popular site that is used today, where someone can post just about anything and anyone is able to look at it. Twitter is another addicting social network that many people are consumed by because it is a way to express ones’ thoughts through images or words in seconds. By using social networks, people try to show that their lives are better than others by posting images or statements. Having Instagram, Facebook and Twitter are used in way to be acknowledged by others. With these social media accounts, people gain millions of followers and likes.
Fights, divorces, cyber bullying, and so much more tragedies happened on social media daily. Social media is harmful for society. This can be proven by how many people have regretted something they have posted on social media, how many relationships have been affected because of social media, and the dangers of false identities on social media. Have people ever thought of how dangerous social media could actually be? Social media has affected many people's lives in a negative way.
Evidence shows that ordinary people are struggling with an addiction to their status online, which causes them to be distracted from the relationships around them. Along with this, depression has taken a presence among the social media population due to the pressure and comparison that comes from the public eye. Another startling aspect of social media is the permanent consequence that can come from controversial decisions, such as tweeting about transgender agendas or sending nude photos. While some people view the aspects of connectivity and business expansion that social media present as crucial to society, they are really not as important as commonly understood. Along with this, online networking provides a tendency for users to present themselves to man and not to God, which goes against what scripture teaches.
Teenagers already have many stressors in their lives and the lack of sleep adds more problems to their life. In his study, Pasch et al. found that depression and the average amount of sleep on school nights is “significantly negatively associated”. This means that as hours of sleep decreases, depression increases and vice versa. In the study done by the National Sleep Foundation, 73% of the students who said they were unhappy, felt they don’t get enough sleep at night.
Especially on social media being the main sources of body shaming and how others look around the world. People who believe in negative body image have a greater likelihood of developing an eating disorder and more likely to suffer from feelings of depression. Women are fifty percent more likely to to say something negative rather than saying something positive about themselves in general rather than saying something positive about themselves on social media (B.S, Danicalo). Negative body image can make many people feel ashamed of how they look also being self conscious,feeling uncomfortable and awkward in your own body is also negative body image. Another sign of negative body image is thinking that you look fat ,feeling like you're not pretty enough or muscular
In the last twenty years, technology and social media have taken over the globe. Technology has enabled people to connect with each other; they can connect through email, text, or social networking sites. Since this phenomenon of being easily connected has occurred a significant amount of controversy has sparked. A few argue that social media is excellent while the majority of critics argue social media is having a negative effect on people. Two articles in which discuss the different effects of social media are “I Tweet, Therefore I am” and “The Upsides of Selfies: Social Media isn’t all bad for kids” by Peggy Orenstein and Kelly Wallace respectively.
Multitasking with various forms of technology has “increased both depression and social anxiety among the general public” (Introduction to Does the Internet Increase Anxiety). Since today’s society is centered around social media, people begin to develop new fears. For example, the fear of missing out, “or FOMO, refers to the social anxiety people get when they feel disconnected from social experiences” (Duong). This not only worsens existing social anxiety, but it can lead to the development of new anxiety. Social media gives people an unrealistic expectation of what they should look like or act.
For years people have played the “blame game” with media and its effects on society. It has been questioned whether the media helps or hurts more in its overall impacts. The media consists of magazines, advertisements, TV shows, and social pages such as Instagram, SnapChat, Twitter, and Facebook, all in which society seems to be addicted to. The real question is, is having all of these sources of media positively or negatively affecting society? Some people blame the media for harming society by causing eating disorders and a low self esteem.

According to statistics, suicide is the third leading cause of death among youth. Victims of bullying are more likely to consider suicide. The issue of such small things, like comments or feedbacks, can make a person take his life. People can also get health problems due to the frequent use of social media.
