Authoritative Parenting
Authoritative parenting is defined as having a high level of warmth, as well as responsiveness to the needs of the child. There is also demonstrated control and a demand for positive behavior from the parent. It is considered to be the most effective form of parenting. When discipline is necessary, the punishment is supported by an explanation of why the behavior is not allowed instead of solely ensuing punishment. This allows the child to understand the consequences of their actions and how they affect others. Another characteristic of authoritative parenting is an allowance of freedom for the child to make their own decisions, within reason. Additionally, authoritarian parents tend to partake in practices such as tracking their child’s phones, increasing their safety. A disadvantage of authoritarian parenting is that it fosters dependence in the child because the parent has such significant control over their decisions and the child has become reliant on strict rules dictating their behavior. Additionally, when teenagers raised in authoritarian households leave home for college or other endeavors, there is a higher chance of them engaging in delinquent behavior. A short-term effect of this parenting style is that it often models that aggression is a successful way of getting one’s way, leading some children to engage in bullying and to use violence as a method of achieving a desired result. A disadvantage of this parenting style is that children tend to struggle with boundaries, especially in situations with more rigid guidelines such as when they start school. However, we don’t tend to focus on why our parents set guidelines and why they have restrictions set towards us. Parenting is defined as influence and discipline of a child by providing them with special love, care and guidance as a parent.
Being a good parent involves having an authoritative yet understanding and pliable view on a child’s wants and needs in life. Setting rules and boundaries with an authoritative attitude in parenting is essential. Letting a child have too much freedom does not end well. Children often get into mischief or serious trouble. The grandmother in HFSW gives the girl too much space and allows disrespect and defiance take place.
In this type of parenting style, parents tend to focus more on the caring and kind side in which they tend to lack in setting boundaries and rules for their children. Parents that are permissive tend to have a friend or buddy like relationship with their child. The setback for this type of relationship would be that child would run over their parents and possible become out of control. An example of this would be, a parent who had finish cooking dinner and called their child out to eat only for the child to through a fit and request for the parent to make something or they won’t eat. The parent would response to this event by apologizing to the child and make something else that they like or want.

Parents need to be involved and provide their children with the opportunities they need to learn, make mistakes and grow into confident and successful adults. Madison James Authoritative parenting is the parenting style that my parents used when I was growing up. Growing up with this parenting style I have become independent and self reliant. Some characteristics of authoritative parents include: listening to their child, letting their child express their opinion, encouraging their children, giving them fair and reasonable consequences, giving their child the opportunity to express their reasoning, having expectations for their children, and most of all showing warmth and nurture to their child. Both my mom and dad have always listened to me and never ignored me. No matter what they have always listened to everything I've ever had to say.
According to Cherlin, “The authoritative parent combines high levels of emotional support with consistent, moderate control of their children” (p. 275). This style is different than the authoritarian or helicopter style as it does not involve control, but instead explained discipline. Leslie Kendall Dye exhibits this style when she defends herself after being scolded for being a permissive parent “I have no tolerance for rudeness, for whining, for unwarranted aggression. I talk to my child frequently about empathy and manners. She has chores each morning and evening, and I ferociously police the number of toys in our house” (par. 9).
Like permissive parents, authoritative parents are responsive, nurturing, and involved. But unlike permissive parents, authoritative parents don’t let their children get away with bad behaviour. Authoritative parents take a firm stand, anticipating that their kids should carry on dependably. Like tyrant guardians, legitimate guardians uphold rules. As a psychologist, I feel that authoritative parenting style helps in developing their social behaviour while authoritarian degrades it.

Being permissive is treating children with plenty of love, caring and nurturing but not much authorities, rules or punishments. They might make their children lack of self-control or aggressive, but alongside with these disadvantages, there are also numerous benefits. Studies have shown that children that come from parents who practiced Authoritarian parenting style suffer in many areas compared to alternate parenting techniques. Authoritarian parenting style affects children emotionally, mentally, and socially. Therefore, children who are raised by authoritarian tend to suffer from lower self-esteem and self worth for example authoritarian parents expect complete obedience and expect their children to behave up to their standards. When the child does not meet their parent’s expectations the child is left feeling inferior.
