First, many community college students have to work several hours while going to school. If many did not work treacherous hours they would not be able to pay a house payment, car payment, and food. Without money none of that is possible. Many of these community college students work either a full time, or part time job. Some community colleges are cheaper than others, but it does cost a lot of money either way which forces these community college students to have a work life and be less involved in school.
I feel as if High school students should go to school later, but continue to get out before or at 2:00. I choose this because most High School students have practice, jobs, and homework. Teenagers bodies do not function until typically after first period and or during first period. Students would have more accurate and better attendance and grades. High School students would develop in class information better if school started at a later time.
Doesn’t everybody need a break from their work to be more effective? Teachers think that homework is very useful to students, but really homework harms students in many different ways. Some kids spend over two hours out of school working on homework that they have gotten that day, and sometimes struggle with understanding why they have to complete that assignment. I think homework is harmful because then kids don’t have a chance to do things that they are interested in. Some families want to know why homework is harmful, how much homework they should get each night, and even the effects of too much homework.
Stress has become a major issue for high school students. Many students have seven classes, participate in sports, have after school activities, homework, and need to get an adequate amount of sleep each night. Some parents and outside influencers don’t see the benefits of having a longer lunch period for high school students. Students complain about how long school is now but they don 't have enough time outside of school to complete everything they are expected to. While it is understandable that some parents wouldn’t want longer lunches because it could result in safety issues and students having to remain in school 30 minutes longer than the traditional time, longer lunches would give students a chance to complete homework, get help from teachers, and eat a nutritious meal.
If it’s hard to perform daily tasks without sleep think of how hard it would be a student and keep up grades in high school without sleep. Which is why high school should start an hour later. “Later start times also generally correspond to improved attendance, less tardiness, less falling asleep in class, better grades...,” (School Start Times, Sleep, Behavioral, Health, and Academic Outcomes: A Review of the Literature). Grades are very important in a students life, grades affect what college a student will get into and future jobs. There’s a simple solution, just make high school start an hour later.
It is hard to attract good teachers to poor performing schools for a few reasons, a couple being the low pay, poor working conditions, and the behavior that they have to deal with most of the time. It is understood that a pay raise cannot just be thrown at people with no effort or opportunity cost. Matthew Miller agrees when he writes that, “job security and tenure would be traded for this raise. The swap here ought to be that you take a risk with your employment and you don 't have to be retained if you 're not good at what you do. If you are good and you get retained, you get paid a whole lot more money” (A New Deal For Teachers).
“Arts education is critical for helping students develop creativity, critical thinking, and problem solving abilities” (Chernin). The arts can help people succeed. Art is a way that people can express themselves and share their beliefs. Arts in education can help people focus and attend. Fine arts are important because they make a huge impact on kids education, they make an impact on how people pursue their life careers, and it also helps with stress and anxiety.
Some teachers are trying to motivate students who are willing to have a better future many different opportunites in the world that will be worth it. The teachers that teach leadership are well appreciated because they seem to help students get out of all there comfort zone and some teach students to be able to talk in front of a large crowd. I happen to barley
Parker Palmer’s The Heart of a Teacher: Identity and Integrity in Teaching had an impact on my idea of what it means to be a teacher. The main points Palmer highlights are what it means to be a great teacher and make a lasting impression in a student; we must teach from who we are and connect with students. I can relate to this as building a relationship with students and a comfortable atmosphere is important in my teaching. Good teaching develops from connections with students and content. When I think back to my placement and reflect on what I wanted to achieve the most, it was to connect with my students and build a relationship.
Character and personality As a beginning teacher, I believe in building relationships with the students, parents, and community. I think that volunteering and being involved in the community is a very important role as a teacher. It demonstrates that you care about your students life, seeing them and engaging with them outside of the school atmosphere. With students, I feel that I have the ability to relate content to students by being energetic. I think your voice needs to show passion, especially in read alouds.
People have the need to feel that within their work environment they are able to be creative with and self-fulfillment (Arnolds,2002). Being that Marshall is one of the lowest performing schools within the district the teachers there do not have an easy task of increasing performance at the school. Therefore the teachers must feel that their working environment provides a challenge. Based
Studies shows that students are getting too much homework every night, it shows that kids are required 3 times less homework then given to them. The stress in too much homework can cause behavioral problems and similar things in that category. Kids in K-12 are getting too much homework because teachers are not following the 10 minute rule. The 10 minute rule starts of with kindergarteners. They are required 10 minutes of homework a night but is getting 20-30 minutes which is to much for kids their age.
