Leadership is defined as the action of leading a group of people or an organization. There are many leaders all over the world and many we may see throughout our everyday life from the manager at your favorite breakfast place to the Chancellor of the University you attend. They all have different tasks to do for their job but their still viewed as the person in charge and leader of the establishment in which they work. In today’s society there are three major common types of leadership Authoritarian, Laissez-faire, and Democratic. Throughout this paper I will talk about the three different types of leadership in greater detail, like the benefits and downsides, along with a real world example of each type. Then I will talk about the type of …show more content…
This style is probably the most well-known. Everyone is able to participate in this leadership style but ultimately the leader is in control of what happens. The leader provides the structure and keeps the groups under control, while also providing them a chance to express their ideas and come to consensus. The benefits of democratic leadership are having your followers feeling more included in the decisions, and them having a higher sense of morale in following there leader. The downsides arise when a quick, or hard decision needs to be made. Democratic is all about trying to hear everyone opinions and trying to make everyone happy while choosing what is best and that can sometimes be very time consuming. Also, trying to come to a decision when the situation is difficult to agree upon can be hard for a democratic leadership style. An example would be the United States government and our president. The United States has parties and groups in place that help the president make decisions on what they think is best for the country. The ups and downs of the democratic leadership can be seen in our government like recently with the government shut down and then when the shutdown finally ended. Democratic leadership is trying to make sure you do what is best as a leader for your people while taking into consideration everyone’s opinions, and being able to handle that sometimes you cannot make everyone happy with your …show more content…
You can be Authoritarian “Dictator” and keep all the power to yourself, Laissez-faire where you let your members be fully self-motivated to get the work done, or be a combination of the two Democratic and let the people have a say in the choices. There are many different leaders all over the world that use one of these styles. Including peer leaders like myself, where I try to create a balance between all three depending on the situation at hand. No matter what style a leader choses to lead by their ultimate goal should be to make sure their group is effective and that the keep their members happy because a leader is nothing without respect from members or followers supporting
Some may say this is the least productive form of leadership. They don’t offer any type of guidance and the group members will be the ones making all the decisions. There is often a lack of motivation in the group and no clear defined role. The last form of leadership is the Participative or Democratic leadership. These types of leaders are usually the most effective because not only do they offer guidance, they also allow and encourage participation from the members.
Leadership Self-Assessment The definition of leadership is, “the process of influencing people to accomplish goals,” (Huber, 2014, p.4). There are three main leadership styles according to Clark (2004), autocratic, democratic, and free reign. The results of the leadership style survey showed that I have a democratic leading style (Clark, 2004). In democratic leadership, the leader helps to facilitate discussions and the decision making process (Huber, 2014).
Democracy is a form of government in which power lies with the people. This means that the people of the said community can either rule directly or indirectly by electing officials to make decisions for the betterment of the people. Democracy is an aspect that can be included in many different governments including, republics, monarchies, and theocracies. In America today, democracy is something we take pride in. This form of government had to start somewhere, however, and ideas of democracy can be shown in many early documents written by some of the first peoples to colonize the Americas.
Democracy, in short, is a government for the people, ran by the people. Democratic ideals refer to standards and persons who look to not only expand democracy, but expand it to the whole of the population. Democracy was the keystone to the budding America; it was what set her apart from other nations. However, citizens looked to improve the coverage and quality of democracy. Throughout the early 1800s to around 1850, reform movements began to sweep the nation.
In developing this paper on leadership, I examined what was most important to me as a leader. As I reflected on my leadership philosophy, I thought about my experiences and the principals that I have learned through my own self-discovery and the observation of other leaders that I have had throughout my life. Leadership has been defined in a variety of ways, there are multiple authors and theorists who have tried to define and understand leadership, all leading to varying theories and conclusions, but one thing that is universally understood is the importance of effective leadership and how someone with good leadership skills can impact so many people around them. (Kakabadse and Kakabadse, 1999; Yukl, 2002; Northouse,2013) The main components that have been identified to play a role in leadership are relations between leader and subordinates, interaction form between leader and followers, the influence that the leader has, the way in which the leader behaves and finally a leader’s traits. (Yukl, 2002) These elements that make up a leader, are then used as building blocks to identify the way in which each specific leader deals with its followers.
" Leadership is the ability of a superior to influence the behavior of subordinates and persuade them to follow a particular course of action." - Chester Barnard Max Weber 's Theory: Types of Leadership In Max Weber 's theory, he wrote about three types of leaderships: Bureaucratic, Charismatic, and Traditional. Weber was one of the first of the theorists to recognize that leadership itself was situational in nature, and that effective individuals needed to move dynamically from one type of leadership style to another to remain successful. 1] Bureaucratic Leadership "Bureaucratic administration means fundamentally domination through knowledge." Bureaucratic leadership is based upon fixed official duties under a hierarchy of authority, applying a system of rules for management and decision-making.

A democracy is a system of government that gives the people the power to govern. This can either be done directly, where citizens actively participate in the decision making of the country, or indirectly through elected representatives. The purpose of the democratic process is to protect the interests of all citizens of a country. In order to do so, every citizen in the country needs a medium through which to express his political opinion to defend his interests. This is the role of political parties.
