INTRODUCTION The term dual earner families originated in the 90’s when researchers studied about the changes in the family after industrialization. Until then women gave secondary preference to the employment in their life. The existed system of norms considered marriage and thereby raising up a family looking after the husband and children as the primary duty of women. The dual earning couples were a major change in the familial relations. The term was begun to be used when the role of women from house wife after marriage changed to working women who contributes to the family income began. The trend created changes in the family, family relations and also in the society. It was also a period which lead to the breaking of a major traditional norm where by women is to be done the role of nurturer and should take care of the household works. The practice of single earner had divide the tasks in the family on basis of the work done by husband but now both the partners contribute financially for the family and the question of looking after household works remains. The hiring of maid, baby sitter, and home nurse are all part of the institutionalizing the family works. Parents today juggle multiple roles including work. A mother contributing to the family income increases this juggling process because of less time to care for the home and children. A dual income can benefit families by easing their financial burdens, but can also cause them more financial trouble because of the need to pay for child care, household cleaning costs, yard care, and other needs.
