As environmental concerns are rapidly prevailing over the globe, the world is moving away from the use of fossil fuels and adhering to the use of renewable energy so as to escape from their harmful effects. This is the reason for the research and development of renewable energy resources along with their eco-friendly nature. Pakistan can make use of these resources to escape from the energy crisis it is facing now. Let us first focus on some basic definitions. Renewable energy is the energy is the energy that is obtained from resources that do not deplete or which naturally replenish on a human timescale. For example: Solar energy, wind energy, tidal energy, wave’s energy, hydel power, geothermal energy. Fossil fuels are fuels that are formed by the decomposition of dead matter, such as dead plants and animals, over millions of years. They include natural gas, coal and oil.
The problems and their consequences related to fossil fuels are as follows: As a natural process, the fossil fuels tend to deplete. Once used they cannot be immediately replaced as they take millions of years to form. Hence this is the reason why the world is moving towards the use of renewable energy resources. For example coal, a major source of energy, has to be obtained by performing dangerous tasks. The extraction of minerals, like coal will deform the land which can cause harm nationally to a country’s environment and can be a source of trouble on a personal level. Huge areas get affected. This can have adverse ecological and geographical impacts nationally. On the whole it will also have affects globally. Unequal distribution is another major factor. Almost 40% of oil distribution lies in the middle east. Saudi Arabia (15.9%), Iran (9.3), Iraq (8.9%), Kuwait (6%) and UAE (5.8%).
