Most people in their lifetimes have driven a car to someplace or another. A car is a common want or needs that most people have, which is why cars are always changing and improving. There is an abundance of different makes and models of cars, making it a more desirable product for consumers. The self-driving or autonomous car is a product of the next technological advancement of cars. Self-driving cars could cause changes to numerous situations, for instance, how we interact with one another or how to react and/or proceed after an accident. However, the beneficial societal, economic, and mental aspects of self-driving cars supersede the drawbacks. “Self-driving cars improve the mobility of children, the elderly, and the disabled” (Bell, 2018). The disabled persons who cannot hear, walk or have limited mobility consequently are not allowed to drive or have significant driving restrictions will now be able to drive with the assistance of the self-driving cars. Those that are disabled, their barriers will be reduced with the assistance of self-driving car. However, they will have more barriers when it comes to face to face communication. This lack communication can generate loneliness. As a matter of fact, “Research coincides with a new report published by Sense and the 'Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness, ' that highlights the scale and impact of loneliness on disabled people - with one in two (53%) disabled people regularly experiencing loneliness”(Treherne, 2017). With self-driving cars, the disabled are able to be transported more easily which will then increase the likeliness that the disabled will become less lonely. People with disabilities also are more likely to have conditions that require access to health services. People like the elderly whose reaction time is too slow, people who have a revoked license, or people who have health conditions preventing them to drive (both physical and mental) will also be benefited greatly from self-driving cars. There is also the aspect of affordability. “According to a recent study, “Emerging Technologies: Autonomous Cars - Not If, But When,” IHS Automotive forecasts that the price for the self-driving technology will add between $7,000 and $10,000 to a car’s sticker price in 2025, a figure that will drop to around $5,000 in 2030 and about $3,000 in 2035, the year when the report says most self-driving vehicles will operate completely independent of a human occupant’s control”(Tannert, 2014). In future years, countless individuals will be able to afford a self-driving car. Society benefits more with self-driving cars and drawback is not as extended. Self-driving cars are new to society and the measure of the impact can only be determined by their potential benefits and drawbacks. By 2030, self-driving cars are going to be a norm so it is better to learn now if they are worth the risk then later. Self-driving cars prevent accidents, create a safer street, reduce road rage, increase human productivity, improve mobility, provides the potential aspect of affordability, and so much more.
