Attending university as a first year university student can rather be a brand-new exciting experience or might be an unexpected nightmare to some. Studying in university is challenging as it differs broadly with the way these students are treated and taught in secondary school. In secondary school, every resources and materials are usually prepared readily on the table. Unlike the style of studying in university, the higher level education requires the student to be on pin and needle to practically understand information given in lectures. Students are required to insert their own effort to search for extra materials besides the notes given during lectures. These challenging demands cause students to fail as they could not cope and adapt with campus life. The environmental changes also cause the students to face difficulties in adapting with their new life as …show more content…
There is a saying that goes “discipline is the key to one’s success” (Devin Thorpe, March, 2014) .This saying applies to all people from every walk of life especially to students. Discipline should be practiced in one’s daily life however self-discipline is something that cannot be easily gained in two or three days, it requires a continuous dedicated and persevering practice. Self- discipline needs to be nurtured from early childhood as parents play a vital role in inculcating this practice into their children lives. This will help students to achieve greater level of achievements. If one practices self-discipline in every aspect of life, for instance, in managing time, studies and money, one will be able to be more organized (Jennifer Cohen, June, 2014). As a university student, one needs to be independent and self-reliant as they are on their own feet. No one is going to tell them what to do anymore, therefore self-discipline is vital and needs to be inculcated within first year university
Self-discipline is one main component I feel is demonstrated through sports and school. I have trained myself to not get overconfident or too low on myself when I make a mistake. When working on homework, I manage my time to complete my work before taking any personal
External forces and the environment play a very big role in the success of students. The environment that a student is placed in and the people that surround them will put them into a certain state of mind that can either impact them in a good way or a bad way. In the short story “I Just Wanna Be Average” by Mike Rose he addresses how greatly external forces and the environment impact a student’s efforts in school and their want to succeed. In the reading “The Accordion Family: Boomerang Kids, Anxious Parents, and the Private Toll of Global Competition”, Katherine S. Newman showcases the impact of the upcoming world-wide acceptance of living at home during college and how that environment can either make or break an individual’s future. Newman
My new mantra for life became “Train harder and smarter.” My new mindset allowed me to achieve long-term success while not compromising my health and encouraging self-destructive behavior. The perfectionism and diligence I had developed after years of training translated into my schoolwork. My hard work and attention to detail allowed me to maintain high marks throughout high school; however, it made me obsess over results by putting too much pressure on myself and getting frustrated when my grades were short of my expectations. As a result, I found an efficient way to structure my studying so I could get good grades while enjoying the process of learning and not burning myself out.
I learned in this activity how crucial time management skills will be to my ability to complete this course successfully. The analysis from the questionnaire (Table 2) as well as keeping a record of what activities I focus on for a couple of days, opened my eyes to a few areas of improvement. From the patterns observed I could see that most of my time was taken up by work and commitments as well as procrastination. Not being able to juggle theses successful led to irritation and was unproductive. Research suggests that managing ones emotions, being self-aware and self-motivate can be factors for success for a student (Allan, 2009).
List of challenges for students in their freshman year in college is remarkably long (see Clark, 2005). To name just a few, in their first year at college students must negotiate: a new level and kinds of academic demands (e.g., large lecture classes in huge auditoriums, large-scale projects rather than
Rationale From observation majority of the students are faced with social, personal and academic challenges. They are at the stage Identity
I will need to be diligent in my courses to make sure I retain the information not only to pass the course but to lead a successful career. I will also need to prioritize efficiently to make sure I’ve completed my assignments before going to the movies and things less important than my education. One thing I will need to work on is staying focused and concentrating on one thing at a time. I have a bad habit of losing interest in things and trying to jump to the next thing. So it will be important for me to stay mindful of that as I further my education.
Overcome Procrastination and Get Motivated Procrastination in some form affects us all. It is present in everyone's life, so don't feel like you are the only one fighting this battle. The truth is, we all have things - tasks, chores, projects, decisions, or actions that we delay or put off. We all enjoy the comfort of doing what is fun and easy.
There are people in this world who always seem to strive for perfection. A perfectionist is basically a person who who has extremely high standards, a person who believes that there is no room for mistakes, that everything must be flawless. It can be one of the best experiences in a person’s life, but it is a major adjustment from the life that most people live prior to it. With this adjustment comes many types of stress that a college student will face. Whether it is taking out a loan, trying to make my parents proud, or relearning how to make friends, there will always be some sort of stress that comes along with being a college student. The stress that the average college student will endure can seem to be overwhelming at times, but these stresses are part of the learning experience of college and overcoming them will teach us valuable lessons that will help us in whatever we
Time management is important to have because it helps get work done more efficiently and is a way to manage your priorities. Priorities along with making commitments are also learned from participating in a extra activity. Students learn how to prioritize their work when in activities while also finding a balance of everything else going on in their life; commitment is also learned but showing that a student needs to be 100% involved to put in their best effort to whatever they choose to do and to be be successful doing it. “Various research studies have lined participation in student activities to higher math and english grades, improved grades and homework completion, better performance on math, reading and science test, and an increased likelihood of applying to college” (Annemarie Mannion).
Mindfulness & Power of our thoughts A strong impact is made on our health and overall well-being by what we think and feel, how we talk to ourselves, and what view we take about what is happening to us, and around us. Mindfulness, in its simplest form, means to be able to pay attention to the present moment, without judgment and criticism. To the things that actually “are”.
Although students will face various challenges in college, these challenges have solutions and ways to cope with them, thus these challenges will lead them to success. Notably, having a balance in life is a real benefit for anyone. It brings a type of peace and serenity into a person’s life that cannot be found without it. Thus, for college students, this is almost
College is full of experience and to get that experience students need to get involved in campus and use all the resources that their campus offer. For my first semester at university I learned lots of information that helped me go through my first semester and I will keep using this resources until I graduate. and these resources are not just for school but also for my personal life. The first thing I have learned in college is how to manage my time and it's important to know that skill so that I would not waste time doing nothing and get schoolwork done and it won’t make me stressful because I have many assignment and project to do. and to always get done with my priority first which is my school work.
Most people want to improve themselves in some way, whether it is to lose weight or give up smoking or increase their confidence.
