Inter-collegiate sports began in the US in 1852 when crews from Harvard University and Yale University met in a challenge race in the sport of rowing. As rowing remained the preeminent sport in the country into the late-1800s, many of the initial debates about collegiate athletic eligibility and purpose were settled through organizations like the Rowing Association of American Colleges and the Intercollegiate Rowing Association. As other sports emerged, notably football and basketball, many of these same concepts and standards were adopted. Football, in particular, began to emerge as a marquee sport, but the rules of the game itself were in constant flux and often had to be adapted for each contest.
The NCAA dates its formation to two White House conferences convened by President Theodore Roosevelt to "encourage reforms" to college football practices in the early 20th century, which had resulted in repeated injuries and deaths and "prompted many college and universities to discontinue the sport." Following those White House meetings, Chancellor Henry MacCracken of New

In National Collegiate Athletic Association v. Smith, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the NCAA was not subject to that law, without reviewing the merits of the discrimination claim.
Over the last two decades recruiting international athletes has become a growing trend among NCAA institutions. For example, most German athletes outside of Germany are based at US universities. For many European athletes, the American universities are the only option to pursue an academic and athletic career at the same time. Many of these students come to the US with high academic expectations and aspirations.
In 2009, Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, British Columbia, became the NCAA's first non-US member
According to the article “When Theodore Roosevelt Saved Football” by Bruce Watson (2014), it recognizes Roosevelt’s effort to stand up and fight for the changes football needed, so that our society could enjoy the game today. There have been a variety of books and articles, written by Bruce Watson, based on events in American History. Although, Theodore Roosevelt, had never played football, he had a great love and concern for the future of the game. Growing concerns mounted in Roosevelt because players had little to no protection needed to avoid injuries.
The rules and the way it was played were still very rugby like, this was until a man named Walter Camp came along and completely changed the way this game was played. Camp was an unreal player at Yale University and is known as the father of American football. Camp helped write the first rules for American football — which were already being played in universities on the East Coast and in Canada in about 1876. These changes included reducing the number of people from 15 players to 11 players and replacing the traditional rugby scrum to the kickoff. Camp also created the rule that a team needed to gain 5 yards in three plays in order to keep possession.
College Football In American Universities November 1961 marked the beginning of college football. Since then, the system has been improved while providing entertainment to millions of people. Steven Salberg writes in his piece to try to persuade his readers to agree with him because he firmly disagrees with the amount of funding that is spent, or rather "wasted." In his opinion, academics are now taking a much lower priority in American colleges because football is now more highly regarded and praised.
Bias In The College Football Playoffs History: Looking Into How And Why College Football Teams Get Snubbed By The Playoff Committee, And How The Committee Justifies Its Actions. Abstract The College Football Playoff committee, the committee in charge of directing the college football playoffs in the Division 1 American College Football league, has received lots of backlash in the last ten years due to the process that teams go through in order to advance to the playoffs. The purpose of the research was to determine why certain schools get snubbed by the playoff committee, which means they did not go to the playoffs when they deserved to, and to examine if there was a pattern or characteristic shared by the schools that got snubbed. The results
The National Collegiate Athletic Association Introduction The National Collegiate Athletic Association also known as the NCAA is an organization that is committed to preparing student-athletes to succeed in skills educationally, on the playing field and throughout their life. College Varsity Athletes Should be Paid In this paper, I argue that college varsity athletes should be paid for playing sports that bring in revenue. In particular, College football and basketball because they bring in the majority of the revenue for the schools. The revenue accomplished by college sports programs continues to increase, due to the growth in interest of the NCAA basketball tournament and the college football playoffs (Berry III, Page 270). Throughout the past few years, one of the main topics debated in college sports is whether or not the athletes should be paid.
During this period of time many players got injured and some of them got killed because of how dangerous football was. This is why the main colleges at the time, Yale, Harvard, and Princeton spoke up, on one side presidents hated it, but in the other side students loved it. In the fall of 1905 Roosevelt recognized that football was threatened. But football was not endangered for no reason, one magazine
Title nine requires athletic programs to be equivalent to enrollment. The number of sports programs for each sex should reflect the ratio of students enrolled in the school. With more women attending college the need for more sports programs has grown dramatically. I don’t want to get in a political discussion about schools who have cut men’s programs so I will only speak on schools who have added women’s programs. This opportunity has not only improved
College football and the NFL are two of the biggest sports today in America. The first college football game was played on November 6, 1869 between the New Jersey Tigers and the Rutgers Queensmen. The first NFL game was played on September 26, 1920 between the Buffalo Bills and the Boston Patriots. College football is more fun to watch than the NFL because there are more teams, better games, and immaculate stadiums. One of the things that makes college football more fun than the NFL is the 128 Division I teams compared to the NFL’s 32 teams.
After graduating from High School one may choose to further his or her education through college. People do this for many reasons. Some people do it for professional benefits, while others do it for sports athletics. This paper will be focusing on those who do go to college for athletic benefits. Specifically, this is focusing on how these college athletes do not get paid and why they should be paid.
American football originated from the sport, rugby, in Great Britain. Rugby was played with a spherical ball and did not allow players to run with it. Football was introduced to the United States around the 1860’s. At this time, the sport was not as popular in the United States and was played occasionally. In 1870, a football convention was held at the Rossin House Hotel in New York (Collins 4).
The NCAA rarely has lost in the courts. It has been getting away with illegal practices for years by holding hostage to amateurism principles it was founded on. Thirty years after the NCAA v. Board of Regents court decision, the NCAA’s hand was forced when Ed O’Bannon and Same Keller took their concern to higher court. The plaintiffs filed and consolidated their complaint in 2009 claiming antitrust violations and misappropriations of student athlete’s likenesses.
One of the biggest issues with NCAA sports is should college athletes be able to unionize and play. According to their website, The NCAA is an organization that represents over 1,100 colleges and universities from the Division 1, Division 2, and Division 3 Level (ncaa.org). In addition, The NCAA doled out more than $2.7 billion in athletic scholarships along with other resources, student-athletes can utilize (ncaa.org). Although the NCAA generates mass revenue, only the top programs are usually profitable while most schools operate at the institution cost (Mitchell & Edelman, 2013). I believe college athletes should not be unionized or paid to play college sports.
The fight for payment of college athletes has not been quick one as more and more issues keep popping up. The NCAA has never allowed payment of its athletes, but small steps towards the overall goal has questioned the NCAA’s past. Its’ decisions has stayed constant since its founding in 1906. The first issue in this decision would not occur until 1952 when the NCAA ruled to give The University of Kentucky the ‘death penalty’ for paying their athletes. This ‘death penalty’ is a one year program ban from participation, the harshest penalty the NCAA can give.
“Female discrimination in sports is a common occurrence all around the world, women are seen as less than males.” (Ladrea) Equality in sports is unequal. In the 1800 women got very little attention and did not get the opportunity to play in any sport in America and all around the world. Men could go and try out for different sports teams and workout but for women they were only allowed to stay home to cook and clean. There were some events women could participate in but it could not be competitive, it was focused on getting active and staying active.
