As a graduate student at Capella, I chose to obtain a Masters in Psychology. This field was selected because I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work and I felt it was best to get a well-rounded education. I do not have an interest in becoming licensed and entering the therapy realm, as I highly enjoy the case management side of things. My passion has always been working in the child protective services field. Although I have experience with adults, this is the field my heart cannot leave. Therefore, choosing the specialization area of Child and Adolescent Development just felt natural. I hope to increase not only my knowledge, but the ability to apply my knowledge in a way that is unique and scholarly to the child welfare field. Theories That Apply To My Specialization There are several theories that apply to field of psychology and more specifically to the concentration of child and adolescent development. …show more content…
According to Broderick and Blewitt (2015), the crisis is initiated, on one hand, by changing characteristics of the person-biological maturation or decline, cognitive changes, advancing (or deteriorating) motor skills-and, on the other hand, by corresponding changes in others’ attitudes, behaviors, and expectations. For example, the first stage is trust verses mistrust. This stage is the first year of one’s life. In this stage, a child learns to either trust or mistrust their environment due to either proper or improper care of their needs. Although a child will still progress to the next stage, the incompletion of the first stage will maintain as a crisis in the psychosocial development. In reference to the child protective field, this theory offers great insight to the psychosocial state or states that the child remains in crisis with
Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION Situation Analysis For every stage of development there are critical periods which affect the development of the individual (Papalia & Olds, 2009). Specifically, childhood is one of these stages. Childhood years, from ages of nine-12 years old, are very crucial and fragile in the development of an individual for it is in this stage when they begin to be aware of negative feelings. These are the times when children experience fears, phobias, anxiety, problems and issues that would affect their future development.
My number one result was a family/marriage counselor. After taking a few psychology classes I decided this was the right major for me. Fast
Child psychology, also called child development, is the study of the psychological processes of children and especially, how they develop as young adults and how they differ from one child to the next. It basically tends to map onto children’s physical, cognitive and social/emotional development. Psychologists attempt to make sense of every aspect of child development, including how children learn, think, interact and respond emotionally to people around them and understand emotions and their developing personalities, temperaments and skills. It also includes how individual, social and cultural factors may influence their development. Child study is of comparatively recent origin.
I have always had a passion for children, particularly children who have experienced trauma. I am fascinated with psychology and how the brain develops and organizes information. I enjoy the process of solving life questions. This ultimately lead me to pursue a career in psychology. When I think of children who have experienced trauma, I am automatically drawn to the Juvenile Justice System.
Abuse is another thing that has been linked, to problems in a child 's development. The earlier abuse and neglect occur in a child 's life the more severe the impact. Furthermore, the stage of development, while the abuse occurs will influence the type and severity of the consequences. Additionally, the more chronic and long lasting the abuse and neglect, the more harmful it is. When the abuse and neglect are caused, by parents or another significant figure a child, becomes confused because their supposed source of safety is the source of their harm.(Frederico 343).
In class we watched the movie “The Boy with the Striped Pajamas”. The movie focused on two younger boys, who both had behaviors that were related to the three domains of development, which are biosocial, cognitive, and psychosocial. There were behaviors were related to the biosocial domain and one being child abuse. Child abuse is “deliberate action that is harmful to a child’s physical, emotional or sexual well-being” (Berger, 2014, pg.236).
I have chosen to enter the clinical social work profession, specifically focusing on providing mental health counseling services for adolescents. Due to the fact that the social work profession encompasses many different careers and fields, there is a broad history surrounding the profession. I have chosen to specifically concentrate on counseling careers concerning the history of the social work profession. Mental health counseling initially began as “vocational guidance in response to the Industrial Revolution and social reform movement in the 1800s” (“History of the Field,” n.d.).
(Licht 354) A crisis that could occur during this stage is the uncertainty of age-appropriate activities. This could be caused by a parent’s expectations or expectations
Transitional periods between the life cycles Many developmental psychologists associate transitional periods of development with developmental crises (Caplan 1964, Levinson 1978, Sheehy 1977). For these scientists the terms “Transitional periods” and “Developmental crises” are synonymous. For us “Developmental crises” is a general term for different types of normative stressful periods of development (Khudoyan 2004) and there are crises, which are caused not by transitions from one developmental stage to another (for example, some developmental crises are determined by reconstruction of self- consciousness).

Psychosocial crisis refers to the turning point of a stage, where the potential for growth is high while psychosocial conflict refers to the struggle of attaining a psychological quality at a stage (Carver & Scheier, 2007). The consultation is an unavoidable task of psychologists and sensitizes parents to the needs of their own child, providing support and permission, in order to cope with the demands of a child placed before them.
