Discipline children is aimed to teach them to have good or proper behavior in daily life. Discipline doesn’t mean punishment, but parents should discipline their children effectively in order to guide or lead them in controlling themselves when interact and behave in their environment. Although some parents prefer to advice children when they are wrong, but most of them often use violence when facing this case. I saw some of my neighbors in my village also applied this to their children. For example when a child ate to much the dish in a party, her mother directly said “Stop! Don’t eat anything. You are shameless”, and it’s followed by pinching in her arm. Another case that I found in my area, a father smacked his son when he said something rude to his father. Moreover, parents forbid the children for something which they are not supposed to do without giving the appropriate reasons. Previously in history, the infant mortality rate was very high, so kids were treated more like adults and were often neglected because odds were they would die. There was a resounding view that kids should be treated harshly in order to become strong. Then in the seventeenth century, the idea of being tender and gentle to your kids was introduced. That traditional punishment methods of parents will not change a child’s/children’s unruly behavior overall, but positive reinforcement will increase the chances of better behavior not only now, but in the future as well. “Positive reinforcement is the presentation of a pleasurable consequence following a behavior” (Craighead). This twist to traditional discipline teaches children to work towards a resolution instead of teaching them to lean toward violence. “For example, the way that parents discipline their children is how children discipline their peers” (Khazan).
As Karen Stephens (2007) said parent play a major role in how children turn out. Parent should try to use teaching method to help children to development a sense of responsibility. Oftentimes, the sense of unfairness escalates to a feeling of humiliation. When punishment humiliates children they either rebel or withdraw. Whether it’s babysitting, volunteering with children, or spending time with my three younger siblings, I have had a lot of experience working with children. I began my babysitting experience with my siblings, then family friends and neighbors. But, my best and favorite customers have been my parents that frequently have me care for my two sisters (ages 10 and 3) and brother (age 7) and we enjoy playing games, reading stories, and making art and crafts; also, I help them do homework, feed them meals and put them to sleep. Having younger siblings, I’ve truly grown to love working with children, and especially teaching them. At school, I am the vice-president of our Kids in Science and Engineering club, which is dedicated to spreading passion and knowledge of science and engineering to elementary school students.
Spanking can be effective when a child is not listening to a parent. If a child isn’t following proper rules and disregarding their parents’ statement, then a spanking can enforce a form of respect that the child has to follow (Jasmine, 2015). It can be an awakening to reality as the child could now think of how their actions are deviant. Parents that don’t resolve to spanking as the first and only method of discipline is essential for both the parents and the child. I believe a parent should always try to enforce rules by talking and showing examples of how deviant actions are frowned upon.
