Coming from opposite sides of the world and hence, different cultures, it’s no wonder their animated pictures are diverse and distinct. What is it specifically what differentiates them? First of all, it’s important to understand the history of the studios themselves. Briefly, Walt Disney Studios was founded in 1923 by the Disney brothers in Burbank, California, whereas Studio Ghibli was founded in 1985 by Hayao Miyazaki, Isao Tahakata and Toshio Suzuki in Tokyo. Given the difference of age between the studios, it’s natural that Disney has not only more movies, but that its animation and the way they tell stories has progressed a lot in its almost 100 years of existence. Also, it helps understand one of the major differences between the two: the question of auteurism. Having become this gigantic company, running for almost a century, Disney has seen a great number of animators, directors and screenwriters parade through its studios, most of them unknown to the public. Why? Because they all had to follow a similar aesthetic and reflect the values of the studio itself. Here the studio has full control over the artist. Moreover, most of the stories they tell come from source material. However, Studio Ghibli in its thirty years of existence has seen very few directors and screenwriters aside from its

The following line from The Florida Project best sums up the film: “You know why this is my favourite tree? Cause it’s tipped over and it’s still growing.” Spoken by Moonee while eating jelly sandwiches with Jancey on the trunk of a lush, collapsed tree, the line draws a perfect similarity between the fallen tree’s continued growth and the motel residents’ efforts to trudge through poverty despite their representations in society. Sean Baker’s The Florida Project depicts Moonee, a six-year old living at the Magic Castle (a dilapidated motel just outside Walt Disney World) with her unemployed mother Halley.

These directors indicate that within traditions and genres lies the overall definition of an auteur: a director whose inventive traits are listed throughout his/her work like a signature.
