It lit up my eyes because it was so magical and extraordinary. It was so astonishing it felt like I was in a Disney Princess movie. Then after the tour we walked to the Bippity Boppity Boutique room. The Bippity Boppity Boutique is where these professional makeover girls do a makeover for you to turn you into a Disney Princess. I chose to be transfigured into the Disney Princess Cinderella.
Throughout the years the Cinderella myth has been told countless times all around the world. It has changed time and time again. One of the few things that has stayed the same is the glass slipper that the prince used to find his true love. In the many different versions of the myth, the slipper is always a key part in the story. In Ella Enchanted, the main character, Ella, has been given a curse by her godmother, Lucinda.
The Change of Sexism in Disney Movies Disney has created many incredibly beautiful films over the years from Snow White in 1937 to The Little Mermaid in 1989 to Mulan 1998 all the way to Frozen in 2013. All these wonderfully made movies that have given many girls of all age’s dreams, aspirations and determination. But there was always something twisted in the Disney movies made back then compared to now. The main character women were portrayed as a weak, damsels in distress, always needed saving and were never were heroes. In the beginning of romantic Disney films the “Snow White and the seven Dwarfs movie was about a beautiful princess dreaming of one day marrying a prince.
The first released animated Disney princess film was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Snow white says to her mirror “mirror mirror, on the wall, who’s the fairest of them all?” When the mirror replies and says nothing less than “of course, you Snow White”, she finds instant pleasure and demands to hear it again. This right off the bat in teaching young people that in order to succeed you must be “the fairest” or the greatest of everyone. Dr. Hardstein theorizes that traditional stories like Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella to promote the idea that if a girl is pretty enough and has fancy clothes and shoes; she will find love and popularity (Wellman). Also every time you see a female character her features are enhanced and “improved” to make her prettier.
When I first started reading this book it reminded me of how every little girl acts at one point in their life. We all want to be princesses when we're younger and want to wear pink and dress up. That’s normal when we're at a young age; I used to do the same thing. So this book is like no other little girl's childhood Disney princesses are a part of every childhood for millions of girls. In this book Peggy tells us how it didn’t always used to be like this.
Disney Princesses have been telling us that it is okay to get married at a young age and think it will lead to happily ever after. Did you know all of the Disney Princesses got married under the age of twenty? Did you also know that the youngest princess to get married was Snow White at the age of fourteen and the oldest princess to get married was Tiana from Princess and the Frog and Cinderella? They got married at the age of nineteen (Faherty). Have you ever noticed the Disney movies never show any of the princesses going to school?
Since the new millennium has started, a new trend has taken over people's’ lives, specifically little girls’ lives, and this new trend is princesses. Both the articles, “The Princess Paradox”, by James Poniewozik and , “Cinderella and Princess culture” by Peggy Orenstein elaborate on the issue of princesses in today’s society. In Princess culture, Orenstein talks about how much cinderella and princess them goods: movies, toys, and dresses, hinder the growth of young girls and almost sees no good in them. Poniewozik in Princess Paradox, takes a different approach than Orenstein and talks about how princesses aren’t exactly a bad thing for young girls.Although, both articles address the issue of princesses, Orenstein completely dismissing the
