1. Introduction
The world is becoming increasing globalised and technology is eliminating the restrictions that have plagued traditional service delivery, including how people access education. It is due to this that open and distance learning (ODL) is becoming one of the most rapidly growing areas of education (Ravhudzulo, 2014: 27). The advantages and disadvantages of ODL have been researched and discussed by many education and psychology scholars (Sahin & Shelly, 2008: 217).
ODL, particularly in higher education and training, is intended to make education accessible to a diverse range of people regardless of their location. Although ODL has been widely lauded as the future of education, literature still emphasises that further research

It is believed that the concept of distance education, commonly known as correspondence education, began in England in 1844 when Isaac Pitman offered a shorthand course through correspondence, enabled by the postal system and rail system (Tait, 2003: 1). However, some scholars argue that the earliest documented instance of modern distance learning can be traced back to the 18th century when Caleb Phillips placed an advertisement in the Boston Gazette offering weekly lessons for a new method of shorthand via correspondence (Baloyi, 2012: 15). Although ODL and distance learning are used interchangebly in literature, they have distinct and different meanings. According to Belawati and Baggaley (in Baloyi, 2012: 15), not all institutions offering distance learning are considered ODL institutions, but all ODL institutions are regarded as distance learning …show more content…
The use of technology in ODL can be used to facilitate the delivery of course material, and enhance the learning process (Baloyi, 2012: 20). The use of technology in ODL opens up the opportunity to make quality and equitable education accessible. This means that technology can be applied as a tool to help develop high-order thinking, creativity, and research skills among students (Robinson, 2008, cited in Baloyi, 2012: 19). Some of the benefits of using technology as a means of student support in ODL are that technology can facilitate collaboration between students; it can bridge the gap between traditionally expensive face to face institutions and the students who cannot afford to attend these institutions (Baloyi, 2012:
al.). Whether we like it or not, technology is here, and here to stay, so it is imperative that students are allowed to use it freely in the classroom, “78 percent of students believe the internet helps them with school work” (Lenhart, et. al.) indicating that students are not simply using the internet for their personal pleasure, they are using it to better themselves in their education. Technology is here, and here to stay, students everywhere are using it, and for even less than half of the schools in the United states to believe that it is causing their students to be in a “cave”, it would give those students an unfair disadvantage in life after high school because they would lack the skills necessary in the current work force.
According to an written by Trent Hamm, “Due to the increasingly high costs associated with a college education, as well as other drawbacks, more and more people have been considering trade school as an education alternative. ”(2) This supports the fact that college has continually gotten more and more expensive instead of getting more reasonably priced. This means college students might need to take out loans in order to pay for their schooling needs in college. Hamm say, “…nearly 70% of students take out loans to help pay for school.
In today’s modern society technology plays a huge role in everyday life. Technology has a big position in education. Today students use laptops for school on an everyday basis to take notes, work on assignments, and research. Many people agree that, when it comes to education, technology can either be very harmful or very helpful. Timothy D. Snyder, a history professor at the University of Yale has written five award-winning books.
With decades of research, it came to a conclusion that not all students learn the same way. Jeremy Roschelle is co-director of the Center for Technology in Learning at SRI International. In his research, he examines the classroom use of innovations that enhance learning difficult ideas in mathematics and science. Chad Lane has a Ph.D. and M.S. in computer science and wants to create educational technology that will compelling and engaging.
2.3 Drawbacks of Student support Despite the value student support brings to the open distance educational system. Open distance educational systems around the world face challenges with changing vital procudures and policies that allow for the accomodation of the increase of students (Van Zyl & Spamer, 2012), Contrary to this, according to Krishnan (2012) open distance educational institutions excelled in providing learning opportunities to disadvantages individuals, but the problem lied where the system neglected to provide the basic requirements to its learners, such as on time delivery of module material. According to Thorpe (as cited in Olivier, 2016) advances in technology in open distance learning institutions resulted in move from traditional
Young Bobby is just an ordinary kid that moved to another school for better and more advanced education, but because Bobby is the new kid he gets picked on or bullied a lot. Which forces young Bobby to tell or to explain to an adult about the situation. Which later causes young Bobby to convert to homeschool for better and faster education. As seen many students from all around the world face this problem in there schools, bullying is not always the cause of switching to homeschool, some other causes for homeschooling are to get faster and higher quality education, negative school environment, improve social interactions, financial problems or to support learning for a disabled child. What is homeschooling?
