Divan and Asher Lev There are many parallels when looking at Pearl Gluck and her journey to find the Divan and Asher Lev and his desire to pursue art. Some similarities are quite evident, such as both Asher Lev and Pearl Gluck grew up in Hasidic Communities in Brooklyn, New York. Other similarities are not so evident but become clear when looking deeper. Asher Lev and Pearl Gluck, both raised Hasidic, go against their core beliefs in order to pursue their desires, while still wanting to live up to the legacies of their ancestors, those that they learned to admire as children. In the documentary “Divan,” Pearl Gluck heads to Hungary in search of the Divan and information of her family’s Jewish history. Pearl was born into Brooklyn's Hasidic Jewish community, a community she …show more content…
Growing up Pearl always heard about her great-great-grandfather's mythical Divan, a couch cherished because of the generations of rebbes that had slept on it. Pearl soon became determined to bring this Divan back from Hungary to please her father, who was Hasidic, and did not approve of her life choices. Asher Lev from a very young age knew he had a gift for drawing. He would draw everything that filled his mind, and whatever he felt. It was a way for him to express his feelings and what he saw in the world around him. However he was raised in a Hasidic community by a very conservative Hasidic father who did not approve of his drawings. As Asher grew up his father would not allow him to draw, and for a while he listened. But Asher needed to express what he felt and saw in the world around him, so as time went on he started to disregard his father's orders. Overtime he drew more and more and eventually took his art to the next level, by going to a teacher and a studio. Soon Asher started to consider art as a religion. Both Asher and Pearl put their

In the 10th Ward, or “Jewtown”, you will find either the most beautiful of women or the most horrendous. “Men with queer skull-caps, venerable beard, and the outlandish long-skirted kaftan of the Russian
“Homeland is something one becomes aware of only through its loss, Gunter Grass.” In Peter Gay’s memoir, My German Question, he articulates what it was like living in Germany with the presence of the Nazis or in his own experience the lack there of. Peter lived in a family that didn’t directly practice Judaism and most German families didn’t perceive them as Jews until the Nazis defined what a Jew was to the public. The persecution of other Jewish families in Germany where far worse than what Peter experienced growing up. There was a major contrast between how Gay’s family was treated and how other Jews who actively practiced the religion in Germany were treated which played a contributing factor for why the family stayed so long before they left.
The book also urges readers to consider how some people can hold the fate of others by showing how Jewish people’s lives were taken over by a different race.
A long time ago, people who were Jewish had to face a crucial discrimination ever since others blamed them for killing Jesus. Nobody exactly knows what the truth was but believes in religion books where the elders’ deformed words of Judaism were recorded. Based on the “Sister Rose’s Passion” documentary, Rose Thering — a Roman Catholic Dominican Religious Sister — questioned this false belief towards the Jewish people and dreamed of a world without religious prejudice, wishing teachers to educate their students to make her dream a reality. No one, especially including the Jews, should be raced or hurt by any opinion that is not based on reason or actual experience. Throughout the movie, Sister Rose encourages everyone to “Be an Upstander, Not a Bystander” for the Jews.
Breast cancer was not always something that could be freely talked about nor was it always a major illness that was endlessly researched on. In Maren Klawiter’s, “Racing for care, walking women, and toxic touring: Mapping cultures of action within the Bay area Terrain of breast cancer,” she analyzes the deep rooted culture of social movements and compares the differences of individual cancer activism fields in the San Francisco Bay area (Klawiter p.2). She write a comparative analysis by examining three different social movements that both educated the public on breast cancer but also reshaped the breast cancer movement in different ways (Klawiter p.2). My claim is that Klawiter produced an in depth analysis of the different breast cancer movements,
The second half of “The Life of Olaudah Equiano” written by himself focuses on his life as a freeman. Equiano, a tradesman traveling the world encountered new adventures, which led to spiritual transformations. Equiano endures a cultural mainstream through multiple viewpoints. He acknowledges similarities and differences between cultures, which transforms his curiosity for adventure toward the practice of converting new cultures to his beliefs as a Christian. What would one expect the identity of a man that bought his freedom out a slavery, only to take part in the practicing of slavery himself?
2.4 Issues of concern including, children 's needs, harms, risk and protective factors Issues of concern, children’s needs, harms, risks and protective factors in this case study are illustrated in this section through the use of social work knowledge, theories and values. The children’s needs can be assessed through the use of The Barker and Hodes Common Assessment Framework (CAF). This tool provides a nationally standardised approach to assessing children and young person’s in need and deciding how the needs should be met. The CAF focuses on three areas including developmental needs, parenting capacity and family and environmental factors (Barker & Hodes, 2007). It also takes into account the parent’s ability and willingness to take responsibility and work with professionals to achieve change.
You are entering a religion called painting” (213). Jacob Khan tells Asher that his gift is a religion of its own. Asher is being spun around by all these different beliefs and ideas of religion and art. Throughout the book, his father expresses his opinion on how art is of the devil, and yet the Rebbe sends Asher to a man who gives Asher the idea that art is a religion. On page 213, Jacob Khan tells Asher: “There has not been a single religious Jew who has been a great painter.”
In Chaim Potok’s novel, The Chosen, a very different society is depicted than what most citizens of the modern world are accustomed to; a society where agency is severely limited by rules and statutes made by a single leader: this society being Hasidic Judaism. The Chosen tells the story of the intense and complicated friendship between Reuven,
Jack Ma once said, “The world needs new leadership, but the new leadership is about working together.” This could not be more true at Boston University through its Kilachand Honors College. I believe it is because their approach of interdisciplinary problem-solving, is about expanding students’ world-views. In this program you are learning with different individuals who have different interest and fields of study. According to Pew Research Center, “Political polarization is the defining feature of early 21st century American politics...”.

Then came the ghettos.” Elie Wiesel wrote. The separation of jews started and the racism starts but nobody realizes it. “Three days later, a new decree: every jew had to wear a yellow star. Some prominent members of the community came to consult with my father, who had connections at the upper levels of the Hungarian police; they wanted to know what he thought of the situation.
