Society as a whole seeks to satisfy themselves. This may be at the expense of their peers or individuals they are associated with. Arthur Miller brilliantly displays this dark side of humanity’s side in his play The Crucible. This play is based on the Salem witch trials in the early 1690s. During the Salem witch trials over two hundred people were accused of witchcraft and twenty were executed. Miller best depicts the evils in people through the main prosecutor in the the play Abigail Williams. Abigail is undeniably the most destructive and corrupt individual in The Crucible. Through her vengefulness, threatening her peers, carelessness at others’ expense, and complete disregard for human life, she ensues a tumultuous event to Salem.
Arthur Miller writes a play called The Crucible. In the play, there is a mass hysteria about witchcraft, all started by a group of girls lying about dancing in the woods. The people accused questioned and hanged if they did not confess. Two people that could have stopped the hysteria are Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Proctor.
Imagine losing everything: your job, family, and good name all because of someone accusing you of something that there is no sound evidence for. Now imagine people losing their lives for insubstantial reasons, and anyone who spoke out against these would lose everything themselves. Wouldn’t corruption reign from personal vengeance and create an aura of hysteria? Readers see this exact effect in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible as well as in the historical event of The Lavender Scare, in both of which people were wrongfully castigated for unjustifiable accusations. The Crucible and The Lavender Scare were both similar and different.
In Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible, Miller demonstrated that it was Abigail William’s flaws: lust, vengeance, and jealously that led her to be responsible the most for the tragedy of the witch hunts in Salem. Abigail Williams started the entire suspicion of there being active member of witchcraft throughout Salem, Massachusetts. She did this for her own benefits and used trickery to get what she wanted. Abigail was corrupt and only cared for her own desires. There are many reasons that these flaws are crucial to the outcome of the play. These flaws will be her downfall.
The death of an entire town because a group of girls lied about dancing in the woods. In the town of Salem, innocent people died in the town of witchery because a group of girls. The only proof they had of witchery was other people’s word that was in the town. Most people blamed others so they were free and they no longer were the bad people. I believe Abigail Williams is the one that should be blamed for the deaths because she lied about what was going on in the woods and blamed other people in the town to be witches so they were no longer looking at her any longer.
In the book Crucible written by Arthur Miller took place in 1692. Some may believe that Reverend Hale is not to blame for all the deaths of innocent people in Salem. The only reason Reverend Hale is involved in this case, is because he is pushing his limits to get the truth. Also, to not let any guilty doers off the chain, for the reason that they will keep repeating their dirty crimes. There has been many witch trials taken place in salem, of which many people have been accused and persecuted.
During the hysteria of 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts, many people were accused of practicing witchcraft. Therefore, their good names, or reputation, was ruined. Other people did anything and committed many sins in order to keep their reputation clean in town. For instance, some characters had to lie, fight, and accuse other people of witchcraft could get the individual out of trouble and keep their good name. when a person got accused of being a witch, the person’s reputation would get ruined and the person would go to jail or be hanged. John Proctor, Deputy Governor Danforth, and Abigail Williams were worried about their reputation in town, and they were willing to commit many sins and harm others to keep their reputation clean.
Many people were put to death in Salem due to the evil lies that were caused by hysteria. In The Crucible, by Author Miller, many poor, innocent villagers were wrongly accused of witchcraft and quickly put to death. The character most responsible for the Salem Witch Trials and the deaths thereafter was Abigail Williams because she must always be the center of attention, she is selfish, and a threatening human being.
Abigail Williams, It is all her fault with her having the affair with John Proctor, It is not all John's fault that the afrie happen it's Abigail's fault that it happen. Abby is the reason that John slept with her, she seduced him into cheating on his wife with her. If Abby did not work for John and goodly Proctor want happen wouldn't of happen to the town and everything would be fine.
In the eyes of some, Abigail Williams is the most despicable character in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. She could be seen as the most evil character, because of the reasons she accuses Tituba, Elizabeth, and Mary of witchcraft.
Arthur Miller wrote The Crucible in 1953. Miller wrote The Crucible because he had a story to tell. Miller was a political advocate against the inequalities of race in America. He was a target for Senator McCarthy. Miller was called to the House of Committee on an un-American activities which triggered him to write about the witch trials. The fanaticism resigned in Salem was nothing compared to McCarthy’s hunt for communists. Witchcraft is the practice of and belief in magical skills and abilities in pact with the devil. Crucible is a container used in the process of heating and melting metals which separates the valuable ones from the less valuable metals. Crucible can also mean in a situation in which people/things are severely tested. The title of Arthur Miller’s play, The Crucible is symbolic of both these terms. In Act 1 of the play, Abigail Williams was the person who was most responsible for the pandemonium in Salem about witchcraft.
The play ‘’The Crucible’’ by Arthur Miller displays the importance of one taking responsibility for one’s action. It expresses in great detail how the inability of one person to stand up to their own mistakes can lead to deadly circumstances. Also just how much lies, deceit and pure evil can result in such terrible situations. In this play, Abigail Williams is very much to blame for many tragic deaths which is demonstrated by her many cruel actions, reminding the audience that one person can destroy an entire society.
There are many characters in the book The Crucible that are to blame for the suffering of innocent people in Salem. Although there are many characters I believe Abigail Williams is the one to blame for the suffering of everyone for her faults. Abigail Williams is a girl who lives at a small town called Salem, in her uncle's house. She works as a house maid for her uncle to live under his roof. She previously worked as a maid for John and Elizabeth Proctor. Abigail was fired as maid from the Proctor residence for loving John Proctor. She has many faults throughout the entire book, but I do believe she deserves all the blame for the outcome of the play.
People lie from time to time, then they tell a bigger lie from time to time. The Crucible, written by Arthur Miller is based on the story of the Salem Witch Trials. In play people were killed and accused of witchcraft. With everyone being accused of witchcraft in the town and everyone is the very scared. The play takes place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692. Some girls got caught dancing in the woods with a slave from Barbados named Tituba. They were caught by one of the girl's fathers. His daughter was Betty and his niece was Abigail. Abigail played a very big role in this play because she knew how to get into people’s mind. Abigail Williams is at most at fault for what happened in the play because she was very jealous, controlling, and selfish. She made sure that no one got in her way. With this mindset, it leads her to do some crazy things.
If witchcraft were a problem in my town I wouldn’t do anything sketchy. I wouldn’t lie about my friends. I wouldn’t even push my friends to lie for me. Abigail should be executed due to the fact that she’s the main reason so many innocent people were executed. She started it all, she has lied and she has also had an affair.
