Issues related to animal testing are now frequently discussed. In recent years, experiments on animals such as mice and monkey for biomedical research has been heavily critisized by various animal protection groups that such action is inhumane against animals. Animal testing is cruel, unjust, and wasteful, and it needs to stop. It is used to test cosmetics, to gain scientific knowledge, and for tests in schools. The Humane Society states that animal testing is tests performed on live animals for basic biology, medicinal, safety, or health research. Even small procedures have the capabilities to cause the animal high stress or discomfort. Some animals are used in future experiments, but most are killed soon after the tests. Every year over 100 million animals are burned, crippled, poisoned and abused. Why? The reason is animal testing. Back in 450 B.C., the first animal vivisection was done and that is when we were able to get a good understanding of how the body works. Now in the 21st century, animals are constantly being tested on, but it is not just so we can understand how the body works. Now animals are tested to see if the chemicals in cosmetics will burn humans or to find cures for diseases. However, when the scientist no longer needs the animal, the animal is put to sleep without any thought about the animal’s life or purpose; so, this poor treatment of animals is morally wrong because animals live and breathe just as humans do and should be treated with more respect. Because much of medical research has nothing to do with animal testing, there seems no reason to continue this kind of animal abuse for animal testing is obviously not the core of medical progressions. Also, alternatives in the medical field are being made to replace animal testing, so animals no longer have to deal with the torture they have been subjected to, and these alternatives will most likely advance the medical field more than animal testing has advanced the medical field. We can trace the issue back all the way to the 4th century when we have the first record of animal experimentation, Aristotle dissecting animals for study. After reading so many stories about the negative side of animal testing, then is there any positive affect about animal testing? The answer is yes, according to the article “Animal research is a source of human compassion, not shame” posted by Lancent. It points out the idea of the use of animals in medical research has save many people’s life. Without animal testing, there will be much less medical improvement than what we have right now, and there will be no new drugs for new or hard-to-treat diseases (815. Lancent). It is true that animal testing has its benefit to our society, but like stated by Peter Singer, “we can only do it for a better good”, in other word, we should not abuse our sources on animal testing.
