Europe in Dark Age Before you say “Europe was never in a dark age.” think of the middle ages right after the fall of Rome, in The Crusades or The Black Death. These are just examples of why Europe was in a dark age. The phrase dark age means unsightly and dreadful, the term comes from Francesco Petrarch, he was an Italian scholar who compared Europe to Asia. The dark ages lasted 500 AD to 1500 AD.
The term dark ages means to be in a time of war, isolation, and sickness, and was first coined by the Petrarch of Italy by comparing it to Rome, the most powerful, wealthy empire known to Europe. During the time of 500 AD through 1500 AD, Europe was in a time of disease, chaos, war and instability. On one hand, people argue that Europe was in a Dark Age, but on the other hand, some historians oppose the idea that Europe was in a growth age. Our own belief is that Europe was in a Dark Age.
The Crusades was a war between two religions , which were Islam and Christianity. They both were fighting for the holy land in Jerusalem. For the Christians the holy land meant that Jesus was born there. For the Muslims the holy land was where Muslims believe Muhammad the prophet was taken to heaven by Allah which is called The Dome Of Rock. In our opinion the Crusades were a failure because it was a waste of time and a lot of lives were lost.
Maybe it was none of these reasons, but you have probably still heard about it. The Crusades or “Holy Wars” was a conflict that lasted over 250 years. They took place in the Middle East, around a city named Jerusalem. Jerusalem was not a normal city though, it was the “Holy land”

The Third Crusade was a three year long war between the Christians and Muslims under very prominent rulers like Richard the Lionheart and Saladin. It was arguably one of the more successful crusades, even though the main goal was not achieved. Even though the Holy City of Jerusalem was not taken back from the Muslims, the Third Crusade was successful to an extent because of the battles won, the strong leaders involved, and the outcomes of the various treaties as signed by the Christians and Muslim leaders
Many labels were used to characterize the Middle Ages, however the best were The Dark Ages, The Age of Feudalism, and The Age of Faith. The Dark Ages accurately identifies the Middle Ages because of all the death, destruction, and plague throughout. The Middle Ages followed the decline of the Roman Empire, which causes very harsh times across Europe. Also this time period consists of the plague which virtually slaughters one-third of Europe.

After many years of victories and misplacements, the Holy Land was claimed by the Muslims. It is perceptible that the Crusades were caused primarily by religious devotion because Jerusalem had a Holy significance, They wanted to signify their loyalty and cause of their God, and to guarantee

There were a total of nine Crusades during the period of 1095 to 1291, led by Saladin, Richard I "the Lionheart" of England, Pope Urban II, Frederick I the Holy Roman Emperor, etc. At first, the Crusades were a way to fight back the Muslims for their conquest of Jerusalem. The idea of the Crusade was a very good marketing strategy by Pope Urban II. It was told that any Crusader would be rewarded a place in heaven, and forgiven their sins.

There is no longer any trade, only unceasing terror...society has no longer any government,” (Doc. 1). These problems led to the decline and therefore this period of time was named the Dark Ages.

The battles irreparably changed the lives of everyone they touched, turning peasants to knights and nobles to slaves.
The crusades happened because of many reasons. First the Turks took over the holy lands. Then the Byzantine Emperor wanted to regain the holy land, so he called for the church 's help. Pope Urban II didn 't want to look weak, so he arranged for the first crusade. That is the cause of the crusades.
Is ‘the Dark Ages’ an appropriate term to describe the Middle Ages? The term “Dark Ages” is not an appropriate term to describe the Middle Ages. When you think of the term “Dark Ages” what do you think of? For me, I think of a very dark and scary time where crime swept the world.
There were intellectual accomplishments during that era. There were new law making ideas and actions put to use. There were many religious expansions and documenting during this time as well. The time era that was called the “The Dark Ages” which was actually the Middle Ages which was from 400CE to 1400CE.
