Domestic minor sex trafficking (DMST) occurs when minors are forced, coerced or otherwise involved in the commercial sex industry. The majority of people who are sex trafficked are females under the age of 18; Research suggests that the average age for a young girl to be recruited into prostitution is 12-14 years old. However, males are just as victimized by this crime as females. Victims of domestic minor sex trafficking often experience feelings of helplessness and self-hatred. They are also easy targets for sicknesses and infections; HIV and AIDS known to be prevalent. They may also experience pelvic pain, vaginal tearing, and/or urinary difficulties as a result of commercial sex work. The best way to help prevent sex trafficking is to …show more content…
More than often, victims of sex trafficking are young female runaways who want to feel loved, which is what their offenders offer to them—love and shelter. However, it does not take very long for the victim to realize she is receiving more than she bargained for. It is a very serious nationwide issue that physically, and emotionally destroys our youth. This crime is highly frowned upon and I strongly feel it must be prevented; there are several ways to ensure that we protect our children. Victims of domestic minor sex trafficking often experience feelings of helplessness, humiliation, distrust, self-hatred, suicidal thoughts, and phobias. “Child sexual abuse has been correlated with higher levels of depression, guilt, shame, self-blame, eating disorders, somatic concerns, anxiety, dissociative patterns, repression, and denial. It has been shown that survivors often take personal responsibility for the abuse.” (Browne & Finklehor, 1986 p. 66-77). Often times, children are abused by someone close to them; either someone they know, or someone they trust. Thus, when the abuse is done by a trusted adult, it may be hard for the child to view the perpetrator in a negative light, causing the victim to obtain self-blame and self-hatred. Because of this, survivors often display self-destructive behaviors and experience more suicidal ideation, than the average …show more content…
Sex trafficking victims are particularly susceptible to sexually transmitted infections such as gonorrhea, syphilis, urinary tract infections, and pubic lice. They may also experience pelvic pain, vaginal/anal tearing, rectal trauma, and/or urinary difficulties because of commercial sex work. The best way to help prevent sex trafficking is to know your facts. The more aware you are of the crime and the more state laws you know, increases the chance a victim has of surviving. If you are a parent, the best way to protect your child is to be over protective of him or her and to be proactive. It is very important to be aware of whom your child is keeping in contact with, what they doing are online, and what messages are being sent through their cell phones. DMST is an everyday crime that is continuously stealing and destroying the lives of our young children. However, if we all work together, and we all do our individuals parts inside of our homes in addition to speaking up and taking a stand to what we see outside of our homes we can save the futures of our children one child at a
Adriana Williams English Mrs. Curley February 28, 2023 Sex Trafficking in Tennessee Introduction Human trafficking is the illegal buying and selling of people for exploitative or other nefarious purposes and is one of the modern forms of slavery. Most of the approximately 800,00 people trafficked over international boundaries each year are under 18, and 80% are women or girls (Browder, 2018). People are still being trafficked for sexual exploitation and forced labor in Tennessee and throughout the rest of the world. Human trafficking does not occur only in one geographical region.
As we speak right now, someone across the world is being forced into labor or sexual interactions. Men are the minority in this case and not forced into this as much as women and children. Most of those children are girls of ages from eight to fourteen starting in this business. I highly doubt any of you know that human trafficking, the modern day slavery is worse today than it was during the Atlantic Slave Trade in the 1500’s. Human Trafficking is where traffickers forcefully control victims to make them engage in sex or labor against their will (Bales 1).
STOP-IT (Salvation Army) STOP-IT is the Chicago chapter for Salvation Army, this program is fairly new which means no one has done a study. The UN Women’s Independent Evaluation Office conducted a study on a program called UN Women. Both programs, want to end human trafficking and want to help all victims. Their main emphasis is giving a safe home to live, therapy sessions, and giving food.
Human trafficking is the fastest growing crime in the entire world and is considered modern day slavery. Almost 80% of trafficking is through sexual exploitation, which means that it primarily affects women and girls (UNODC, 2009). Victims are often tricked into the business through promise of work or a better life and sometimes just randomly stolen right from their homes. However, this is not just an issue overseas. Michigan is listed as the state with the second highest rates of human trafficking.

These frameworks relate directly to human sex trafficking. The gender roles displayed within sex trafficking are predominately male ‘pimps’ or ‘traffickers’ using multiple tactics to lure women and children into the trade. The average age of a girl first being drawn into the sex trade is 12-14 years old. According to the National Human Trafficking Resource Center, 51% of the victims lured into the sex trade were women who believed to be in a romantic relationship with their pimps, 18% were offered food, a place to sleep or money, 14% were lured through fake job offerings, 11% were abducted like survivor Clemmie Greenlee, and 6% were lured using other methods. According to the National Runaway Hotline, 1 in 3 teens will be lured towards prostitution within 48 hours of running away from their home.
It is really perturbing that when suddenly when driving into a certain neighborhood, or street, and in a specific time of night, you see various women slowly starting to appear walking in the night. While children wonder why those women are out so late, and parents try unsuccessfully to distract them from the situation, no one truly dares to change anything. Most just simple choose to look away, not aware of the horrors these people face. The sole idea of one’s own family members in this industry, would make anyone’s skin crawl. Sex trafficking has stained society’s history, present, and sadly, it’s future.
Many people have heard of human trafficking, yet many people just turn a blind eye to the issue. In a sense that if it is out of sight it is out of mind. Which is why we need a response team for the individuals who are able to move past these experiences and make it out on top. They need help as well as support. The problem is many of the victims of sex trafficking are stuck and do not know how to get out.
As previously mentioned, anyone can be the prey of a trafficker, typically those who are in a vulnerable state. At only the age of fourteen, a woman named Holly Austin Smith had been taken into the sex trafficking trade. This was during the time period between the transition from middle school to high school where she found herself struggling to fit in with her friends, while dealing with family problems. Through her description, it was a time where she was waiting and wanting to connect with someone, and stated “I was looking for someone to acknowledge me in some way” (Smith). Although she had been previously sexually abused by a relative, and suffered from depression after this, her new encounter opened other doors.
Sex Trafficking is a form of modern day slavery that exists throughout the United States and globally. It is one of the biggest lies in society (Farley et., 2014). The Vanderbilt Law Review indicates that the majority of prostitutes do not enter the prostitution lifestyle on their own free will choice, but instead becomes a prostitute due to a variety of vulnerabilities that both pimps and traffickers exploit. This explains why young women get blindsided and think they are becoming a prostitute when in reality they are a sex trafficking victim (Elrod 2015). When the United States made prostitution illegal, it did not change the mentality of the johns.
With this being said, it is clear that women and young girls are typically the most at risk when it comes to commercial sexual exploitation. In this category of trafficking, traffickers act as “pimps” and sell these women like prostitutes. These victims are made to perform sexual favors to make their captor or captors a profit. Most of these crimes go unseen and
Olivia G. Nifong Mrs. Gallos English 3 honors 25 March 2018 Sexual Human Trafficking Although it is illegal in the US, people are still trafficking others, and the rate of trafficking continues to rise. Sexual trafficking is a huge problem that needs to be stopped immediately and the statistics show that trafficking is going up more and more every single year. sexual trafficking is a trade of people from one country to another. It is usually done to sexually exploit someone and is usually illegal and without the victims consent.
As prostitution is a heart breaking reality for women globally, to a woman or young girl who has grown up in a destroyed environment, the pressure to provide for her family or to make “quick money” prostitution quickly becomes an ultimate option. However, fighting human trafficking and reaching out to a prostitute is not the same. Young girls, women and even some boys are physically locked behind doors, terrified for not only their lives, but the lives of their loved ones. Typically human trafficking begins when someone in a family owes another party some sort of debt but cannot afford it. The child or adult becomes a form of collateral.
Sex Trafficking of Children Most children that are trafficked are runaways from home because of abuse (Child 1). Some children are victims of trafficking, in other words prostitution, by their family members. The family members prostitute their children for survival (Human 2). Children that are forced or persuaded into prostitution are brainwashed. The children or victims think it is the right thing to do to survive (Surprising 3).
Women and children trafficked into sex industries are often forced into activities such as prostitution and pornography. The basis of the sex trafficking trade is female victims and male perpetrators and the gender roles of victims and perpetrators value gender-focused strategies to combat sex trafficking (Busch-Armendariz, 2009). Sex trafficking. Sex trafficking receives a great deal of attention, trafficking for labour purposes is actually in greater demand (Gozdziak, 2008). Labour trafficking applies to men, women, boys and girls.
