Domestic Violence And Physical Abuse

Victims of domestic violence are not at fault for the abuse that is inflicted upon them. A lot of people ask why the victim stayed in the first place, but in some cases the answer is not always so simple. According to Why Do Abuse Victims Stay, “We often put ourselves in the place of the victims and imagine ourselves leaving at the first signs of abuse. But breaking free of abuse is not simply a matter of walking out the door. Leaving is a process.” A lot of times when people hear and talk about domestic abuse, the lines are blurred around the term victim. Too many times people forget the true meaning of that word, especially concerning instances of domestic violence. There are many reasons why victims stay.

For many centuries, women and men were not treated equally. After the Civil War, women had many essential successes that helped them earn respect. Women have tried very hard to get to the point where they can be treated with the same respect as men. As of today, women are still not equal to men. Women face violence, discrimination, and barriers in society.

As defined in “Establishing A Domestic Abuse Care Pathway”, domestic violence is “Any incident or pattern of incidents of controlling, coercive or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse between those… who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality. The abuse can encompass… psychological, physical, sexual, financial, or emotional [abuse].” Domestic violence is common, with around 1 in 4 women experiencing it at some point in their lives, and there are many things that need to be fixed about the handling of domestic abuse cases. That means every minute approximately seven people are a victim of abuse, every hour 402 people, and every day 9,648. These numbers are astonishing and bring to light the tangibility of this issue. Domestic violence exists, it is a serious and an important issue I believe should be brought to the table of conversation. Domestic Violence has become an issue that has lacked the attention of the public that needs fixing. Both of the articles demonstrate the obstacles that are presented in domestic violence cases. The image gives the awareness of the life threatening they live through, and have difficulties looking for help. The topic my group chose is spousal homicide. In spousal homicide we cannot say how we can help the victim or try to solve their problem because the victim is already dead. A step before or what leads spousal homicide is domestic violence or spousal abuse. There for this next few paragraphs will be talking about what is domestic violence or spousal abuse, why spousal abuse happens, why the victims stay with their abuser and how we can help those victims from domestic violence/ spousal abuse.

Domestic violence, a critical issue that has a negative impact on the Native Americans in the United States. Domestic Violence is known to be a pattern of assaultive behaviors including physical, sexual, psychological attacks and economic coercion, by adults and juveniles against their families or intimate partner or both. Family violence is the most common especially within marriages and it can affect the whole family and children who live in a home where abuse occurs are always affected by it. Studies show that between 3.3 million and 10 million children witness domestic violence annually. As a child, the surroundings around them really do shape and make impact on their personality, mentality and actions that they make. When a child is exposed to domestic violence, it can affect their growth and affect the type of person they will be for their future. So when a child is witnessing such type of behavior, it can and usually does, have many consequences emotionally, mentally, and physically.

The third objective is to explain the prevalence and the manifestation of domestic violence in those states.

There are one in four women and about one in seven men that first experienced dating violence between eleven and seventeen years of age (Fifield 1). Domestic violence is being verbally, emotionally, physically, or sexually abused in an intimate relationship. Males are the dominant spouse; the female is the spouse being used.
