(TITLE) There’s something about reading that gives it more respect than speaking, writing, and viewing. It’s the combination of these senses which make it a book. It’s like you’re in the plot, living the setting, sympathizing with the characters, and everything that is written, can be related to and aspirated for. The novel How to Read Novels Like a Professor by Thomas Foster, takes the reader inside the journey of embracing and analyzing a novel. This book helps one to deepen and further their understanding and become more in tune with the piece of writing itself. In the very first chapter, Foster jumps rights in and begins to examine the first page of a novel. He speaks of how they must be “seductive” and “give you everything you need to know.” It is kind of a life or death situation.

According to recent studies almost 80 percent of students in the United States end up changing their major at least 3 times over the course of their college career. Last summer when I wrote this essay I said I wanted to be a teacher, but this summer is a little different. Over the summer I’ve read countless books and I feel like my love for literature is pushing me toward publishing. Publishing would allow me to help inspire others through amazing works of literature.
Yet, despite the length, the book was an enlightening experience. It was very well written, with a quick, intriguing pace. Although I typically avoid non-fiction, Moore’s writing style was captivating. The point of view alternated throughout, switching between the two Wes Moore’s stories. This was a tad confusing to read at first, as there were times that the point of view changes mid chapter.
To emphasizes, I choose this book for many reasons. When I got to choose a book the book that I first say was “She Went to War” and I had to write down 5 books that I wanted. That was the first book that I wanted. On the paper I had Circled,Started it and also Underlined it so many times to show that I really wanted the book. Novels flourish a persons imagination and present advances in their independent knowledge. Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451 displays a society deprived of novels, leading Montag to the realization of affects novels have on people. Montag fought for what he believed in, the right to read and learn from numerous novels, containing various topics ranging from innocent child books to vulgarity stricken novels. “The School Library versus the School Board: An Exploration of the Book Banning Trend of the 1980s” contains several arguments Montag would agree with, such as, “Even when a book contains language that is not appropriate for everyday use or describes unsavory ideas or feelings, the ability of the book to have a positive impact on the reader or provoke discussion or awareness is not necessarily diminished.” This quote symbolizes the positive viewpoints an “objectable book” most definitely possesses.

Reading may seem like an run of the mill thing where you laugh at the funny jokes, glare into the abyss when the text possess a provocative quote. To Mike Bunn the author of “How to Read Like A Writer,” has a different interpretation of what reading should be. Mike Bunn emphasizes that reading should be more than just context, he argues that you need to question the authors’ choice of words, literary devices, sentence placement, in order to be able to become better readers and writers ourselfs. He presents it to the audience in a manner that is very interactive. He begins by explaining what he means to “Read Like a Writer”(Bunn, How to Read Like A Writer), followed by questions that should be asked about the text and writing style, and techniques that should be done to become a more proficient writer.
In the essays, “Reading to Write” by Stephen King, “The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me” by Sherman Alexie, “Learning to Read” Malcolm X, and “Learning to Write” by Frederick Douglas have three things in common. In each essay Reading has contributed towards the authors life leading to benefit from learning to read, allowing them to leave a legacy behind. In each essay the authors has thought their self how unlike Frederick Douglass. For Stephen King, reading has done a lot for him. King stated, “Every book you pick up has its own lesson or lessons, and quite often the bad books have more to teach than the good ones” (221).

Science has proven that reading can provoke positive changes in us as human beings. Annie Murphy Paul is the author of the article ‘Your Brain on Fiction’ published on March 17, 2012. Annie explains how researchers have discovered that reading can initiate different parts of the brain, this is the reason why sometimes literature can make the reader so engaged and attached to a piece of writing. Research also explains how reading has the ability to produce activity in our brain’s motor cortex. Finally, Annie explains how reading fictional pieces can change how you interact with other individuals.
Part of my literacy experience was about learning an important lesson in a book and how each page carries a story that’s brought to life. At the time, I didn’t learn about learning critical literacy until I was in my English 91 class. In my English 91 class, I was taught how to use critical thinking in my papers. I imagine how much literacy has been involve in my life from childhood till college. The books I’ve read in my childhood is how I ‘ve taught how to write.
Also, there can be several opinions to one aspect. Thus, when reading and analysing a novel, students should have the opportunity to develop ideas and concepts of their own. Aside from that, a novel makes the reader aware of the aspect of subjectivity. The characters in a novel have their own subjective way of looking at the world surrounding them.
