Harriet A. Jacobs was born a slave in North Carolina in 1813 and became a fugitive in the 1830s. She recorded her triumphant struggle for freedom in an autobiography that was published pseudonymously in 1861. As Linda Brent, the book 's heroine and narrator, Jacobs recounts the history of her family: a remarkable grandmother who hid her from her master for seven years: a brother who escaped and spoke out for abolition; her two children, whom she rescued and sent north. She recalls the degradation of slavery and the special sexual oppression she found as a slave woman: the master who was determined to make her his concubine. With Frederick Douglass 's account of his life, it is one of the two archetypes in the genre of the slave
Opening her piece with an anecdote, supported by her reflective tone, Smith captivates the audience towards her own experiences of a mother. Her invigorating story of her three toddlers “squabbling” and “constant demands” obliges the reader to be more interested in what she is saying as it is a relatable situation for most mothers. Furthering upon this, Smith shifts to an informative tone as she addresses the epidemic of obese children due to “spending over 70% of their days being sedentary”, confronting the parents with shocking statistics, the parents of young children are aroused by fear and is urged to reconsider their responsibility as a parent. Moreover, Smith confidently provokes the readers by asking them rhetorical questions and then answering them, proving that the answer is obvious, just like the problem. Hence, Smith’s use of a visual representation of two children who are projected as disconnected and slightly inhumane, digs into the emotions of the audience, creating an impersonal and sinister mood.
The moment she gave birth something sunk into her mind, that she could never fully comprehend until that moment. As she holds her child in her arms, taking extra precautions, so that her child doesn’t get hurt, she realizes that it is now her job to take care of her baby. That her biggest concern is no longer herself, but the child who was not in her arms yesterday. That yesterday’s problems are no longer of concern to her. That it is her job to provide and raise a human being.
Have you ever had trouble finding faith in a difficult situation? In the book " Life as We Knew It" by Susan Pfeffer, the author portrays many different themes throughout the book. In the book, the theme is to always have faith and hope even in the hardest of times. One way the author portrays the theme in the reoccurrence of unfortunate events. Throughout the story, Miranda, the main character, is having trouble finding hope in the troubling times that not only her but everyone is going through.
She was heavily abused by the child’s mother. Harriet had to stay up at night so the baby wouldn’t cry and wake the mother. If she fell asleep, the mother would whip her. When harriet was asked to help in the beating of another slave and she refused, she would be beat. Once when another slave went out to the market without permission, his owner asked harriet to help beat him.
Sylvia explains why Miss Moore wants to help children’s education, “She’d been to college and said it was only right that she should take responsibility for the young one’s education, and she not even related by marriage or blood” (304). Miss Moore wants to teach the children because she wants them to become aware of what is happening in their society. While they are in the toy store, Miss Moore asks the children what they think about their trip and one of the children, Sugar says, “that this is not much of a democracy if you ask me. Equal chance to pursue happiness means an equal crack at the dough, don’t it?” (309).
As her years of conducting the railroad culminates, Harriet starts her career of concocting superb speeches on top of her head. Not only was the audience moved, but they were also surprised of how inspiring her tone of voice is (207). In addition, as she tells her own synopses of her life, Harriet speaks her story with dramatic interpretation and excellent eloquence in a speech so well that the audience was thrilled upon scheduling another speech with Harriet. In one of her speeches, Harriet ferociously convinces a little boy to holler ‘Fire, fire’, which is a feat that only parents can normally do, let alone a stranger. (126) Also, Harriet persuaded, not always by cajoling, with a deep-tone husky voice and a gun in her hand, a despaired slave to continue on the journey instead of wavering on the decision to either turn back and risk punishment, or to go to freedom.
In the second half of the Canadian novel Lullabies for Little Criminals, author Heather O’Neill continues to illustrate and conclude the development of the themes of loss of innocence and love. Baby’s negative life decisions, such as delinquency, prostitution, and drug addiction are elements of her need to feel a sense of belonging and affection. Unfortunately, the lack of her family’s presence causes her to seek appreciation in the wrong places. Although Baby may be innocent, she is also vulnerable as she is so oblivious to real life. As her exposure becomes greater, her character slowly begins to deteriorate in the last half of the novel.
