Deja Patterson English 3 Honors 2nd Block Mr. Colagross 4 January 2016 Doubt Analysis: Oppression of Women It is said that as a woman you are suppose to stay home, clean up, breed and raise the children. Women were not allowed to hold a higher job or success than men because they might feel intimidated and their ego might actually shirk instead of being inflated. The concept of how women are suppose to portray, have been suppressing women into these roles by both men and women since the earth has been created. In the 1960s women were thought to be weak and stupefied, but never thought to be clever or decisive. Females were never treated equally …show more content…
Although Sister James felt like Sister Aloysius was just trying to destroy her spirit and love for history it is actually nothing like that. Sister Aloysius is trying to teach her how to strong in this world that oppresses women to dial down their intelligence and to bow at the feet of men. As displayed through the conversations before between Father Flynn and Sister Aloysius, Sister Aloysius stood up against him acting as if she was questioning her authority and she was the boss or they were on the same level. She is one of those women who would stand against a man and question him without feeling threatened or …show more content…
However, it did help women to see that their more than a housewife and that they do not need to wait for Prince Charming to sweep them off their feet. If you want something done then you have to do if for yourself and that’s what many women had learned in the 60s. Although there are some naive women, for example Sister James, who believes in anything a man tells her because she thinks they might actually feel bad or they were just trying to protect you but to defy the boss, who was trying to help you survive this world and the workforce they are in, is very prudent. Sister James wanted to be herself but it was not until the end did she realized that this world is a vicious place that feeds on the innocent and weak and no is whoever they say they are. This was the world that helped men feel as if they were superior as if a woman hadn’t helped through the process. Females go through their whole lives without being noticed of what they do or did for men because they were and may still be seen as just a “keeper.” Woman stopped being known as the “Keeper” because in 1960, Betty Friedan fought back and females everywhere joined in to fight the oppression and the idea roles they were suppose to portray as housewives and
Society has had this concept of what women’s role in life should be since the beginning of time. For as long as anyone can remember, humanity expected women to stay at home, attend the men’s needs, and take care of household duties. Since society has evolved, women have more freedom, rights, and respect from others. However, there is still a small percentage who think women have a distinct place in life and shouldn’t drift from their “path”. In Twin Peaks and “Where Are You Going, Where Have You Been?”, women were treated as if they were irrelevant and melodramatic.
Sister Aloysius actually reveals to Sister James that she never was able to actually prove that Father Flynn was guilty, but she still claimed she was certain that he was guilty. Furthermore, Sister Aloysius even tells Sister James that she lied about Father Flynn’s previous history in a phone call just so that she can remove Father Flynn from St. Nicholas
The Women’s Movement was a symbolic movement in achieving political and civil equality. It assisted women lifestyles in the United States, granting them equal opportunities as men. Therefore, the Equal Rights Amendment guaranteed equal rights with men and the Equal Pay Act guaranteed equal pay. But these opportunities rarely helped women since they were prohibited and discriminated from universities and communal school, young girls have to be taught at home by mothers due to the segregation from males and females. In the 1960s, organizations were predominantly constructed for women since they were driven away from society of men and can’t attend schools and colleges.
Sister Aloysius does this behind the guise of protecting the children but really she doesn’t like Father Flynn. She wants to get rid of because he isn’t the kind of role model Sister Aloysius wants. She is an old-fashioned woman who hates change and wants things to stay the way they have been forever. Father Flynn threatens this atmosphere of nostalgia that she is trying to maintain, so she seeks to ruin him with this conviction. Father Flynn knows this at shouts, “You’re insane... got it in your head that I’ve corrupted this child...
Women in the 1960s were expected to work in the kitchen and stay at home to clean. Regardless of the major change between now and then, it was normal. Many women thought this was unfair and wished they were much
As stated earlier in the section B: How did Women Going into the Workforce in the 1940s Affect Then and Now? women going in the workforce caused changes that affected everyone. The change that occurred for women was positive because this led to more opportunities, they got more jobs at the time, and they were able to make more money! The change that occurred for men was different depending on the person. For some men, the change was negative because they then had to leave for war or, men that were unemployed before, may have had less of a chance of getting a job.
When most people feel like they are close to God; they usually make good moral decisions. In Doubt by John Patrick Shanley; Sister Aloysius tells Sister James that “In the pursuit of wrongdoing, one steps away from God. Of course, there’s a price.” When stepping away from God someone is committing sins and they are doing things that are usually not accepted. As the main characters stepped away from God, they had to pay the price of making wrong choices and the price of being pressured by those choices.
Sister Aloysius does not like Father Flynn and she believes that he is up to no good and wrong doing. Sister Aloysius accuse Father Flynn of sexually abusing Donald. Based on the evidence in Patrick Shanley’s play. I think Father Flynn is guilty based on his weird behavior around Donald and not telling the truth.
The 1960's were the beginning of social rebellions, like, women's rights movements and the Civil Rights Movement. Women in positions of authority were perceived as manipulators and castrators. For example, one of the most controversial points McMurphy makes in the book is the fear of women, and the women in the book are constantly described as threatening and terrifying figures. Most of the patients have been damaged by relationships with overpowering women. Chief's mom is portrayed as a castrating woman.
Society is a funny thing. People are going to judge you, no matter how hard you try to please everyone. Someone will always be there to disagree with whatever you’re doing. However, times have definitely changed. As an example, during the times of “The Crucible” it was a major sin to even dance.
The life of an average married woman in the 1950s was very different from that of today’s woman. This was the age of conformity. Very few women worked after getting married; they stayed at home to raise the children and keep house. Men were the suppliers of their families. They had no thought for the unfeminine problems of the world outside the home; they wanted the men to make the major decisions Many women during the fifties may feel that they were happy being mothers and that they were equal to men, just different.
During the conversation between Father Flynn and Sister James, Father Flynn seems to threaten Sister James in a way: “You might lose your place as well” (Shanley 40). Father Flynn goes out of his way to convince Sister James of his innocence, which is very odd behavior considering she is at a lower position than himself. Father Flynn also goes and talks to Sister Aloysius against the
Women. Women’s involvement in the working world have contributed to many items that would be missing from the world today; if they had not been allowed to work.. Women have struggled with sexism in the workplace since before they were even given the chance to try to work. They were taught from a young age that their job was to provide children, cook, and clean for their husbands, while the husband worked and provided the money. What men did not know however was that women were capable of so much more(Jewell, Hannah).
During the 1890’s until today, the roles of women and their rights have severely changed. They have been inferior, submissive, and trapped by their marriage. Women have slowly evolved into individuals that have rights and can represent “feminine individuality”. The fact that they be intended to be house-caring women has changed.
Gender Equality is the only way forward. What is gender equality? Gender equality is achieved when all genders enjoy the same rights and opportunities across all sectors of society, including economic participation and decision-making, and when the different behaviors, aspirations and needs of women and men are equally valued and favored.
