Throughout Jay Asher’s novel, Thirteen Reasons Why, his main character Hannah goes through her life and how the people in her life played a part in her death, and how it influences them. She includes a map with stars on the places they need to go that pursues along with the tapes. Hannah describes how she has changed throughout the novel because of what people have said about her. Porter. Hannah reaches out to him and she knows this is her best chance. She wants someone to show they care and to tell her not to do it. She is leaving the fate of her life in one person’s hands. When Mr. Porter says, “I’m not trying to be blunt here, Hannah, but you can move on” (page 278). That is when Hannah knows she is done and it is really time to give up. This really changed Hannah because it made her believe killing herself was the only option left. She reached out to multiple people and showed the signs of being suicidal, but no one paid attention. Therefore, Thirteen Reasons Why is a book about people changing and realizing the importance of life and how small talk can hurt someone and push them to that breaking point. Speak was written in 1999 by Laurie Halse Anderson. The book is about Melinda, a freshman just starting high school. Melinda starts school off with no friends, she lost the ones she had over the summer. A traumatic event causes Melinda to shut everyone out, and not speak to anyone. Growing up usually takes time, but Melinda is rushed into maturity too soon and must help others do the same.

Thirteen Reasons Why by Jay Asher is a book about a high school student, Hannah Baker, who is telling her story about her own death. Before she commits suicide, she creates thirteen tapes telling her story about her life leading up to her death. Each tape she creates is about a single person who has somewhat contributed to her emotional deterioration and eventually her decision of taking her own life.
