In this compelling novel, Arc of Justice, written by Kevin Boyle the life of Dr. Ossian Sweet changed dramatically in 1925. The story begins with Ossian Sweet, a young African American boy, living in Bartow, Florida at a time where oppression and segregation was implemented upon people of color by the Whites and those involved in the Ku Klux Klan. With the dreams of being an educated man, Ossian’s parents sent him off to Xenia, Ohio to get an education, where he later becomes a Doctor. He marries a young African American female named Gladys and with both of them having great aspirations of living in a nice neighborhood, they move into the bungalow on Garland. Bringing in Darrow was a great move by the NAACP because he brought class, intelligence, intimidation, and emotion to the case. An articles claims that in the 1920s Darrow was one of " the most famous trial attorney in America, a persuasive speaker who earned up to a quarter million dollars a case” (“People & Events: Clarence Darrow”). This means Darrow was a gifted speaker that knew what to say, which helped win the case. The publicity they got allowed them to start making campaigns to fund the NAACP since they needed the money to pay the lawyers. These funds were made so that the NAACP could represent the eleven members in the Sweet case and to start the NAACP legal defense fund. According to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, has been “America’s premier nonprofit legal organization [that has been] fighting NAACP Legal Defense Fund: protecting the civil rights of all Americans for racial justice.
