When I was in 3rd grade, my teacher used to read us stories about Dr. Seuss and his adventures. The first book I read was Yertle the Turtle and it was the best book I read in 3rd grade. After we finish Yertle the Turtle, My favorite quote from this book is "I know, up on top you are seeing great sights, but down here at the bottom we, too, should have rights." we made Dr. Seuss hats. Dr. Seuss is more than nonsense words and rhyming.

On Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs I would say this is the fourth level, esteem needs. The plain bellied Sneetches always felt inferior to the star bellied Sneetches, and did not think they were as good. As soon as the plain bellied Sneetches gained their stars the star bellied Sneetches were angry because they could no longer tell if they were truly the better Sneetches. The story ran in a circle where the entire time one side was not self confident and felt they needed to buy their social status. 2.
Humans have become desensitized to pollution and degradation of the environment. The use of non-recyclable materials and disposing of waste irresponsibly has become something that we see every day, and we do not acknowledge as something harmful, because it does not directly affect us. However, there are both fictional and nonfictional examples of excessive use of resources and the misuse of materials that we do have, that can bring to the attention the damage that we are really causing. Two examples of this are Dr. Suess’ The Lorax, and Easter Island. Although very different, both the inhabitants of the town in the Lorax and Easter Island both contributed to degradation of the environment.
Archetypal school of literary criticism is a type of literary criticism that is concerned with recurring myths and archetypes in symbols, characters, actions, and situations within literary pieces. A myth is a story handed down through history and an archetype is a typical character, action or situation that seems to represent such universal patterns of human nature. Archetypal school of literary criticism strongly applies to Dr. Seuss’ children poem, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”. In this literary piece, the character archetype is the Grinch being the outcast. The outcast archetype is a character that is banished from a social group because of a crime committed.
The “Ted” Seuss Geisel, known as Dr. Seuss, is a great children’s author (“About Dr. Seuss”). Surprisingly, the start of Dr. Seuss career is quite different from how he ended up. One article states “Ted Geisel started his artistic career as a cartoonist for the New York Weekly Judge and as an advertising artist…” (“About Dr. Seuss”). Another famous doctor in the world is Dr. Sigmund Freud.
In the story and video of “The Sneetches” by Dr. Seuss, the Sneetches experience the fact that it is possible for society to coexist and function properly without racial and ethnic barriers. While the Sneetches without stars are not persecuted or abused, they still are seen inferior by the star-bellied Sneetches. When a mother sneetch speaks to her little one she states that “When you are out walking, you walk past a Sneetch of that type without talking. Keep your snoot in the air, and remember to snort.” This connects to the real world today because it shows how ideas and beliefs today are passed down from parent to child, thus creating another generation of offspring that will then pass down those same ideas to their kids.
Having read, The Poisonwood Bible book, it was both fascinating and interesting. The author, Barbara Kingsolver, was quick with her diction and used quite a lot of figurative language. The objective of the book was to show the true meaning of Africa and show how it was difficult to convert the people of Africa to Christianity religion. The setting was present in Georgia, which later they traveled to a village called Kilanga in Congo, in which they started their journey. The main characters includes, Nathan Price who was the main character, his wife Orleanna Price, and their four daughters, Rachel, Leah, Adah, and Ruth May.
The Importance Of Equality In the story The Sneetches written by Dr. Seuss, the central idea is equality; Seuss conveys this theme by using rhymes in a book for children. Flashback to my junior year. I sat quietly in my AP Lang class as my teacher, Mrs. Fisher, announced that the reading competition between the language arts classes called for the book count for September. She stood at the board, marker in hand, staring out expectantly at her large class. Hands shot up across the classroom, and my own nervous hand rose up to join them. Mrs. Fisher happily chalked up the small fortune of books that our class had read.
The passage Last Child in the Woods by Richard Louv was written because of his stand on the separation between people and nature. Through crafty thoughts and examples he mainly directed it towards parents of our generation. No doubt that he thinks that all this new technology is changing our childhoods in a bad way. For example children of these days are plugged in most of the time to a screen of some sort. This is decreasing our children's knowledge of creativity and taking in the beauty of nature.
