Dracula is an 1897 gothic novel written by Bram Stoker that tells the story of an English solicitor named Jonathan Harker who takes a business excursion to the town of Transylvania where he stays at the castle of Count Dracula. The story is a mysterious and eerie tale with a multitude of quirky and peculiar characters that all add to the grotesque atmosphere. Nosferatu is a 1922 film directed by F.W. Murnau set in the fictional German city of Wisborg which follows estate assistant Thomas Hutter as he ventures to Transylvania to sell a house to Count Orlok. The extremely influential German expressionist silent film utilizes light and shadow to bring a bleak and desolate tone to the film and creates an atmosphere that is equally stunning as it …show more content…
The major one that you notice instantly is the fact that the protagonist's name is changed from Jonathan Harker in the book, to Thomas Hutter in the film. Jonathan's girlfriend Mina is changed to Ellen, in the book Dracula’s servant is named Renfield, but in the film, Renfield is a house agent named Knock who the Count brainwashes and becomes his servant, and of course Count Dracula is changed to Count Orlok. Renfield’s character in the film is a major change from the book’s version of that character. In the book, Renfield serves as Dracula’s assistant throughout the book simply killing flies and bats for him. However, near the end of the book, he undergoes some character development and believes he is rehabilitated and should be released immediately. “There was an unusual understanding of himself, which was unlike anything I had ever met with in a lunatic… His request was that I would at once release him from the asylum and send him home.” Shortly after this the attendant came running and told Jonathan that Renfield had had an accident and was found on the floor covered in blood. “He had heard him yell; and when he went to him found him lying on his face on the floor, all covered in blood.” Yet while he is on the floor, approaching his death, he decides to warn Jonathan about Mina. “When Mrs. Harker came in to see me this afternoon she wasn’t the same; it was like tea after the teapot had been watered.” With his final breath, Renfield decided to help Mina and the team against Count Dracula who he had been serving the whole story. However, in the film, a house agent named Knock is brainwashed by the Count, he is placed in a mental asylum and spends most of the film there, praising the Count and serving as his minion. The noticeable character development for Renfield in the book makes the character in the film feel a little more one-dimensional and is not as striking
The four pieces of literature to be compared in this comparison are Dracula by Bram Stoker, Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992) by Francis Ford Coppola, Nosferatu (1922) by F.W. Murnau, and Dracula (1931) by Tod Browning. In these works of fiction, there are answers to what it would have felt like to be a vampire, what it would have felt like to have a vampire in one’s life,
In dracula things don't get interesting until the end of Chapter 2. the chapter starts to show a dark and unpleasant horrible feeling that Stoker makes in the novel. Harker’s journal shows you how things change when hes at draculas castle. harker starts to feel like he isn't the house guest he thought he was and feels like he can never leave. stoker didn't make the story of dracula but he made the novel as if he did showing that he could make a gothic story and widening his range of writing.
The reader gets to know the characters on an extremely personal level since the entire book is written in diary entries that are placed in chronological order. The chapters leap back and forth in time, but never become confusing. Jonathan Harker’s journal takes up the first 58 pages of the book and covers Jonathan's time spent at Castle Dracula. Jonathan writes about other
He was seen as the hero of the novel. This acted in accordance with the quintessential fiction novel trope. However, Mina was pivotal in the discovery of Dracula’s real identity as well as finding his location, leading to his defeat. This challenges the female stereotype as women were underestimated and depicted as no real help. While Dracula’s depiction of women was quite positive, Nosferatu was not as much.
There are only two protagonists. The story includes figurative languages and also a visual imagery of what has happened. An example of figurative language would be: “beautiful expanse, bathed in soft yellow moonlight till it was almost as light as day” which explains that it was bright like day. Another example is a simile which is ‘inequality move downwards with considerable speed, just as a lizard moves along a wall. This suggests that Harker is scared to see a person moving along the wall as it unnatural.

In the novel Dracula told by Bram Stoker, is about a nineteenth century story, Jonathan is traveling to the Castle in Transylvania, in order to finalize a transfer of real estate in England to Count Dracula, as well as Dracula's attempt to find new blood and spread the undead curse, and the battle between Dracula and a small group of men and a woman. It is told by many different points of perspectives from each character using different types of technology in order to communicate through letters, telegrams, diaries, telegraph, etc. I believe the effect of the structure of novel is that it is easier to understand and better to comprehend through other perspectives as the way it is being told in order to make it real. The structure of the novel
Bram Stoker's Dracula film conflict between good and evil is one of the novel's major themes. The image of Count Dracula is one of a strong, evil force trying to spread his curse of the dead throughout England. Jonathan Harker, Mina Harker, Lucy Westenra, and Abraham Van Helsing are among the cast of characters who stand against him as the forces of good. To combat Dracula and ultimately vanquish him, they employ their wit, cunning, and bravery. The conflict between science and superstition is a key theme in the film.
Comparison of Dracula and Twilight’s vamps Characterisation of Dracula and Meyer’s vamps in these two books is entirely different. Through Stephanie Meyer 's novel vampires are illustrated as inhumanity attractive, powerful almost human creation. Her vampires have major advantages over Stocker 's they are described almost without any weaknesses. Despite of vamps ' reputation they can consume garlic and drink animal blood which is enough for survival, cannot transform into a bat or wolf but some of them have special talents as reading in others minds (Edward), steering emotions (Jasper) or see the future (Alice).
This can even allow the reader to possibly ‘fill in the blanks’ about the unknown character with her own fears, adding to the horror of the novel. Count Dracula’s first appearance takes place in his castle in the Carpathian Mountains of Transylvania when Jonathan Harker arrives to discuss a real estate transaction. When Harker arrives at the castle, he first hears Dracula approaching in an ominous manner before he actually sees the Count. “I heard a heavy step approaching behind the great door, and saw through the chinks the gleam of a coming light,” Stoker writes, “then there was the sound of rattling chains and the clanking of massive bolts drawn back. A key was turned with the loud grating noise of long disuse, and the great door swung back”.
Soon after Harker finds out that he is imprisoned within the castle. While trying to find a way to escape Harker comes across three female vampires who attempt to feed off of him until they are interrupted by Dracula. Harker then discovers the secret that Dracula feeds off human blood, and that he has an intention to kill Harker. Harker attempts to kill Dracula, who escapes with fifty boxes of dirt from his estate to England. The book then switches to England to Mina Murray, Harker’s fiance, who is visiting her friend Lucy Westenra.
Dracula is not seen much in the book other than the beginning and the climatic parts. The author Bram Stoker throughout most of the book writes in Dracula as his other forms such as a bat. This really disappointed me because I was expecting / hoping for more of the actual Dracula having face to face encounters with the other characters. The author creates a lack of fear and suspense because of this and the book needed more face time with Dracula himself. I didn’t quite feel the “vamiric trauma” (Jamil Khader, 1, 1) as promised by the reputation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula.
Bram Stoker definitely not the first to write about vampires. Bram Stokers novel was a example of the new gothic fiction style. Bram Stokers novel was also inspired by the Transylvanian
Although afraid, Harker followed through to visiting the castle; but the trip was harrow. When he arrives, he realizes that Dracula is a well educated and kind man.
