The Samurai's Garden takes place is both the crowded streets of Hong Kong and a small coastal village in Japan, during the time when Japan's Imperial Army was invading China in the late 1930's. In the book Of Beetles and Angels, by Mawi Asgedom, a sudanese refugee family immigrates to America, seeking new life. The value of reading Of Beetles and Angels is that it shows that you can become something from nothing in the hardest situations. It shows the value of setting goals, working hard, and being kind to others.

Freak the Mighty is about a boy named Max, and he is getting bullied. He is getting bullied because he’s “dumb, slow, and stupid”. Until Freak came along. They became best friends, and freak was weird too. Freak was bullied because he was “short, and small,” but very mighty indeed. They share a lot in common, so they are perfect for each other. Max is the main narrator of the book, and he tells a lot about his feelings and when he’s excited or something.

The author, Molly Merryman, earned her Ph.D., from Bowling Green State University in 1995 in American Culture Studies. She teaches at Kent State, and is associated with History and Justice Studies, American Studies, and Women’s programs. She is also a documentary film maker, who has received national and international screenings and awards, along with three Emmys. Merryman’s book, Clipped Wings, includes a useful index, that has cross-referencing for both topics and names. The bibliography of this book is organized into categories of different sources, such as articles, books, government documents, etc. However, this bibliography is not annotated. The author used about seventy-five percent of secondary sources, and around twenty-five percent

Early in the story there is a mood of hope and excitement despite the boys “incarceration”. This is highlighted in the description of the moon illuminating the snow covering the ground outside the boys sleeping quarters. “The moon and the stars spread a thin blue light over the whitening ground below.

“The Lost Boy”, preceded by “A Child Called ‘It’” then, followed by “A Man Named Dave” is about the struggle that keeps going, even after he finds believes to be his new home. Many find it incredible that, such a young child could withstand all of this torture. It’s a great book about the struggle he faces yet, you feel the emotional effects you begin to have by this. You may be able to relate the emotion he feels, as the regard into fitting in, feeling lost, losing hope, and being abused. You sense everything in this book. You feel the hurt of the child, the anger, the frustration, the sadness, the joy, everything.

Texts critique the moral concerns of their time. Caswell’s novel ‘A Cage of Butterflies’ (Published in 1992) illustrates this through the thematic concern of science as a double-edged sword. Caswell emphasises the moral break-down of humankind through the characterisation of mad scientists, who through their greed and desire for scientific advancement fail to remember basic human values and respect for others. Through this, Caswell highlights the danger of humans usurping the role of God, and the importance of morality for the future of humankind.

In her book Bird by Bird, she has a section titled: “Shitty First Drafts” in which she displays her own experiences along with uncovering a new technique for the readers. In this section, she writes about how the only way to write a good final draft is by writing a shitty first drafts, and her experiences related to it.

A hero is a person who overcomes their fears to fight for what is right. A person who fights for change. Heroes are everywhere. Heroes can be anyone. Every hero is a unique person with feelings and families. An example of a hero is Minerva Mirabal, who fights in the Dominican Republic for change. She fights the dictator Trujillo and the rest of the regime with her life. In Julia Alvarez’s historical novel In the Time of the Butterflies, Minerva is characterized as both an individual and a martyr.

In the Time of the Butterflies is a book about 4 sisters, Patria, Dedé, Minerva, and María Teresa. The book is about the three girls growing up and their experiences during the time of the underground movement to overthrow Trujillo. The book was written in memory of Dedé’s 3 sisters who had been ambushed and murdered, which we are aware of since the beginning of the novel. The beginning chapter of the book is describing Dedé as she waits for a woman who is going to interview her about her three sisters, she then goes into a flashback she has of her family talking at the dinner table and her father mentions someone named Trujillo, which then gives a hint at who this book might be formed around.

Have you ever thought of yourself as a person who has the guts to do anything, but in reality when it comes time to actually do something you back out of it? In the book Unbroken, by Laura Hillenbrand Louis “Louie” Zamperini had partaken in the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, Germany. Not long after Louie had competed in the games he had continued on his path to success to join the U.S. Air Forces in 1940, right around when World War II had begun. When Louie and his fellow crew members were flying over the Pacific Ocean in their B-24D Army Air Forces bomber one day in May of 1943, they had crashed into the ocean due to two engine failures. After crashing into the Pacific there were only three survivors; Louie, pilot Lieutenant Russell Allen

endure in their entire life. In the book Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand, Louis Zamperini was an Olympic runner. He was drafted during World War II . During the war, his plane crashed in the middle of the ocean and he was stranded with little resources to survive. This book follows his incredible story battling starvation and abuse in Prisoner of War camps (POW). The suffering he went through ultimately led him to his newfound faith. During Louie 's time on the life raft and in the POW camps he suffered an unbelievable amount of pain and desperation, but out of that suffering came faith.

Did you know even under water there is a war going on, not by humans but by sharks. It is not all peace in Shark Wars written by Ej Altbacker. Shark Wars is about a reef shark named grey who causes trouble in his hometown. Eventually he will get banished and has to survive on his own. He ends up wandering into a different species of sharks territory looking for food. He has to help them fight in a war in order to get food and a shelter. An adventurous characters, off-this-world setting and an ineffective theme make Shark Wars a book all shark lovers will pick up.
