Throughout history, the United States of America has often been described as a “melting pot,” meaning a place where many different types of people blend together to form one, unified nation. If this description of the United States is accurate, it is crucial to ensure that all of these different individuals are able to live in harmony with one another. This is especially true at the collegiate level of education. In the last few decades, liberal arts colleges have made it their mission to increase diversity on their campuses. Diversity comes in several forms, particularly class-based and racial. This undertaking is one that should be prioritized at colleges across the country. There is significant evidence that diverse college campuses produce stronger, more intelligent individuals. With diversity come enhanced social development, stronger critical thinking skills, and heightened self-awareness. These features produce stronger individuals, thus strengthening the community at large.
The most significant positive health and safety culture that I noticed is a boost to staff morale and pride because of acknowledging our performance in doing health and safety assessment. Having team building activities helped us to do our work more effectively. I never felt being excluded while working with staff having diverse cultures and languages. In today’s era managers are challenged daily with disputes like ethics, diversity, working in teams, privacy, sexual harassment, and handling differences. The similarities and differences that exist between you and your work community may have an impact on your work. Everyone around you will have similarities and differences, there is a reason we are all individual people, we are all different and have something different to offer. Culture plays an important part in shaping a person’s behaviour. Cultural values and beliefs provide a framework for people to make assumptions about and respond to their situations and or circumstances. Culture also strongly influences perceptions and expectations.
When beginning this course, I had little knowledge of the depth of diversity found in our world today. I lived in a small town, which acted as a shelter from the harsh realities faced by many ethnicities, but also prevented me from experiencing cultural diversity. With my lack of background knowledge concerning diversity, I would say that my level of cultural competence was nearly non-existent. I had never been exposed to any ethnicities, other than my own, until moving to college. It wasn’t until moving away to college that I realized how naïve I was concerning the diversity of our nation. While learning of cultural competence I became aware of all I still needed to learn and experience if I were to become an ethical social worker.
Cultural diversity can affect the workplace in numerous ways. Negative impacts can include miscommunication, creation of barriers, and dysfunctional adaptation behaviors. Positive impacts can include building a sound knowledge base fellow colleagues, which can make for smoother integration of the organization into foreign cultures.
Society and a workplace are influenced by social, political and cultural beliefs. These are based upon experiences of which are changeable. Throughout our lives, we develop these beliefs. In the article “Embracing Diversity for A Healthy Workplace,” the author Robyn Harris gives a reflection to help identify areas that can improve personal and social awareness. Inclusion treasures diversity and builds community in this article as he discusses how beliefs impact on diversity and different cultural groups. Next, he provides how beliefs may contribute potential problems in a workplace. Studies have shown that in the United States it is expected that there will be a 90% growth of non-white racial and ethnic groups between 2010 and 2050. With this being said, the majority to represent in the healthcare field will remain caucasian. Diversity within healthcare is definitely not growing as fast as the diverse world is growing. Out of the 25 percent of black and Hispanic in the work only 9 percent are found in the healthcare world. Black, Hispanic, and Native Americans only make up 12 percent of the U.S. medical school graduates.
