After a number of attempts, the federal Dream Act legislation has still not passed. Despite the difficulty the federal government has had on passing the DREAM Act, several states have taken it on their own initiative to create their own version of the DREAM Act. “Currently, at least seventeen states have laws allowing students who meet specific requirements, regardless of their immigration status, to pay in-state tuition rates at public postsecondary institutions” (Table). Supporters believe the federal DREAM Act will impose significant benefits to both the United States and immigrant populations and will continue to push to get the legislation passed. However, those who oppose this legislation believe it would greatly harm our country
The Dream Act Introduction The Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors Act or more commonly referred to as “The Dream Act”, made its debut as a bill some 16 years ago, during the Bush Administration. In the years passed the bill has been call for several votes but has yet to prevail. There the bill sit waiting to become law. The Dream Act in its original form, contained such language that would provide thousands of immigrant children the opportunity to receive U.S. Residency (a “Green Card”). The Dream Act would have ultimately allowed children born to immigrant/undocumented parents within U.S. boarders the ability to serve in the U.S. military or person a degree in higher education, began a career and even get a driver’s license.
Immigration and The American Dream Immigrants from the mid 19th century and early 20th century consisted of mainly Southern and Eastern Europe, Asia, and elsewhere. Immigrants motivations, experiences, and impacts shaped what an immigrant had to go through being a different person from another country. Although Americans dislike foreigners who came to the United States, immigrants had a role in political, economic, cultural, and social aspects of immigrants because of their motivations, experiences, and impacts in America. New Immigrants did not have it easy and went through obstacles natives, political figures, bosses and others had thrown at them.
It is interesting to see how previously experiences acquired from our interaction with the CCF team, literature review, and data analysis have had a positive impact on preparing the presentation. My core program is Early Childhood Education. During the most recent live lecture (week 4), you stated we were allowed to present out final project on any current event. I am deeply dedicated to ECE, however, the recent accusations against the Wounded Warrior Project has influenced my decision to choose this subject, over my core program. Being the daughter and wife of career servicemen, I am devoted to the interest of our American Veterans. Both my father and husband were disabled American Veterans, both served during war times and both died too young (58 & 54, respectively), due to service connected disabilities.
Being Latino, this course has brought up some points that I have related to their values has changed the ways I think about things and believe that everyone deserves a chance and that our race shouldn’t define us. It is hard that we live in a conservative city that has isolated us in this bubble. Keep them striving and break this stereotype that everyone puts them into. This brought an eye opening of my awareness toward racism. The difficulty that they have to go overcome based on their race.
