Everyone, at some point in their lives, feels that all of their dreams will come true soon but not quite yet. We feel the strong positive energy inside ourselves and feel the need to grow as much as we can. There are times where we feel our dreams are unreachable and; there are times where we feel our dreams are realistic and soon to be accomplished. In the poems “Dream Variations” and “I, Too” by Langston Hughes, the author expresses his feelings towards discrimination against African-Americans. Langston seems to be disappointed how his dreams cannot be a reality in his poem, “Dream Variation” while in the poem “I, Too”, he seems to be close to his dreams and hopeful. In the second stanza, he states that “I am the darker brother....And grow strong.” He speaks of all men in America, including his own race as darker. When he refers to the white people when he uses the word “they”. So he flashback to the slavery days when African-Americans were sent to the kitchen when the guests are home. History of his race has their own party in the kitchen, their appetite is not ruined even though they are discriminated by their race because they grow stronger with each other’s support.
